Actress Ming-Na Joins Avengers Spin-Off TV Pilot ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’

With the overwhelming success of ‘The Avengers’ flick earlier this year, director Joss Whedon (the man behind such classic TV shows as ‘Buffy, the Vampire Slayer’, ‘Angel’ and ‘Firefly’) is working on a spin-off pilot for ABC called S.H.I.E.L.D.as we reported here.

Since then, speculation has been high on who would be joining the cast of this much-buzzed about pilot. The first casting choice went to character actor Clark Gregg, who will reprise his role of Agent Phil Coulson as seen in the ‘Iron Man’, ‘Thor’ and the aforementioned film ‘The Avengers. Now, though, comes word that ‘ER’ alum Ming-Na will be joining the Whedonverse in the role of Agent Melinda May, a kick-ass pilot and weapons expert.

This spin-off is, according to a report at Entertainment Weekly, to focus on the superspy operation that was established in the Marvel universe; but few other details on the pilot have been revealed (no surprise, there, right? as that would spoil the fun of waiting to see it).

Among Mina-Na’s TV credits are the sci-fi series ‘Stargate Universe’ and ‘Eureka’ as well as providing her voice for ‘The Batman’ animated series and the animated box office film ‘Mulan’. She also starred in the critically-acclaimed movie ‘The Joy Luck Club’ based on the best-selling book by Amy Tan as well as the films ‘Street Fighter’ and ‘Push’.

It is too soon to know whether ABC will move forward with the ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ pilot, but given the devotion by fans of the Marvel Universe and the Whedonites; it is certainly going to be a popular development that will be under the watchful eye of a lot of fans. ABC should pay heed to that kind of dedication.
