New Girl Season 2 Review “Models” – A Friend’s a Friend Forever

New Girl Season 2 Episode 3 Models
It was CeCe’s birthday in this week’s episode of New Girl, “Models,” but instead of spending the night in with Jess watching Clueless (awesome) and making evening gowns out of towels (okay…), CeCe decided she wanted to go to a club with some of her Russian model friends, prompting a massive boob fight with Jess.

I understood both sides of the fight. Jess wanted a traditional celebration, plus she hated CeCe’s friends who thought Jess looked like a cartoon monkey in a Russian cracker commercial (there was a mild resemblence), but CeCe wanted to do something different, to go out and have fun. The real fight started, though, when Jess made it clear that she thought CeCe’s job was beneath her. That’s when the boob slapping began, much to the enjoyment of many viewers, I’m sure.

Maybe CeCe and Jess wouldn’t be friends if they met each other as thirty-somethings, but that’s the beauty of long-term friendships. You get to know a person through every stage of their life; you get to grow up together. There’s something great about friends allowing that to happen without letting themselves grow apart. It takes work, but it’s worth it in the end.

The fight ended when CeCe, suffering a massive post-birthday hangover, had to let Jess cover for her at a car show. Jess had to take a few steps in CeCe’s shoes…on a rotating platform…and she realized that CeCe’s job was way harder than it looked. Also, the 2013 Ford Prius is pretty. Thanks, Fox!!

On the other end of the spectrum, yet surprisingly on theme, Schmidt started to feel like Nick wasn’t at all appreciative of his friendship, specifically the ways in which Schmidt expressed it such as bringing him cookies or cleaning his room. At first it seemed like Nick was just being Nick and that he was rightfully creeped out by Schmidt’s actions. But under the surface lay something much deeper.

Nick doesn’t feel as if he deserves Schmidt as a friend. He didn’t really ask for it; Schmidt just showed up in his dorm room one day and instead of getting offended by Nick’s insults, he just laughed right along…and they’d been friends ever since. Again, two people who would not become friends if they met in their thirties, but who were absolutely stuck with each other because they didn’t.

The funny thing is that Nick and Schmidt totally need each other in their lives. They balance each other out even when they’re totally getting on each other’s nerves. All they need now is a giant turtle.
