Covert Affairs Season 3 Review “Wishful Beginnings” – You Can’t Have it Both Ways

Covert Affairs Season 3 Episode 12 Wishful Beginnings

In this episode of Covert Affairs, called “Wishful Beginnings,” Annie comes back from Russia to find that some things have changed while others obviously never will.

Annie sure has had a rough time recently. Not only did she make the mistake of falling in love with the man that she was supposed to be handling (not that I blame her really, the heart wants what the heart wants), but she suffered in a Russian prison and then came back to find that some people aren’t trusting her in the agency. All in all, she’s had some pretty bad luck the past few months.

So when I saw that Eyal was going to be in this episode and actually working with her in D.C., I figured Annie would be getting somewhat of a break. Sure it’d still be a mission but she and Eyal work well together so what could go wrong, right? Turns out a lot can go wrong, especially when you’re being asked to betray the man who just risked his life to save yours.

One of the most interesting things I found about this episode was how it set up the fact that Eyal seems to be walking into the exact situation that Annie just got out of. He too was asked to betray Annie and use their shared affection to get more out of her than she was supposed to give, but refused to do so because he obviously cares for her. It’s funny to me that both of their bosses asked them to do the same thing, and then turned around and used it against them. Both Annie and Eyal were accused of letting their feelings get in the way of doing their jobs, and yet both of them were asked to use those very same feelings to get the job done. It’s a wonder these two are still sane and I don’t blame either of them for trusting each other more than their respective agencies.

And then there was Auggie. I felt so bad for him because he obviously really, really needed to talk to Annie and she was never around. The fact that she kept going to Eyal, and is now staying in his place, makes me suspicious of where this story is heading. Obviously it’s too soon for Annie to start having any real feelings for anyone after Simon, but it looks like we might be gearing up for a love triangle. If that happens, I’m going to be so torn because I love both Auggie and Eyal. In fact, after watching them interact in this episode, I’m kind of hoping they somehow end up out in the field together. How awesome would that be?

My favorite bits..

I kinda figured they’d be taking Annie back to The Farm, but I didn’t think they’d be taking her to an actual one.

“Did you fall in love with Simon Fisher?”
“You asked me if I did anything wrong.”

“The truth is the CIA needs me to blur those lines and I’m very good at it.”

Auggie waiting outside of the elevator for Annie to show up.

“I did walk into the building..and then into a column.”

Eyal asking to meet Auggie, and then giving him a huge hug. Awww.

“You didn’t think I’d be blind?”
“I didn’t think you’d be this short.”

“Look, just because I saved you out of a Russian prison doesn’t mean you owe me anything.”

Eyal standing up for Annie when Rivka started going after her.

Arthur telling Annie that Joan had been very distraught when she’d been caught in Russia.

Poor Auggie looking so disappointed when Annie said she couldn’t go out for beers.

Annie reliving the last time she was at that house. I don’t blame her at all for going and staying in a hotel. I wonder if this means she’s going to buy a new house.

Annie reaching over and grabbing the box before Cole could slide down. I know he got it back, but I still thought that move was cool.

Aha! I KNEW Annie probably didn’t give Cole that watch.

“What I mean is, the people you can count on are here.”

Aha! I also KNEW that Seth was going to turn out to be helping Joan with her addiction.

Wait. Eyal has a place in D.C.? I so wasn’t expecting that.

Auggie showing up at Annie’s old place.

“I didn’t share it with Mossad. I shared it with you.”

Annie playing with the key around her neck.
