Scandal Season 2 Premiere: 5 Things You Should Expect

Scandal (ABC) Season 2 Premiere White Hat's Off (6)

Scandal was one of my favorite pilots of the 2011-2012 season and ever since it premiered back in April, I have been hooked.

One of the sharpest and most astute shows on television, Scandal focuses on Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) a mastermind of crisis management, her firm and team of “gladiators in suits.” I was able to screen the second season premiere episode “White Hat’s Off” and there is a lot to be incredibly excited about, but I wanted to focus on 5 things you can expect in the premiere to get you ready.

Who Is Quinn Perkins?

That’s the question on everybody’s mind isn’t it?

Last season ended with the reveal that Quinn wasn’t exactly who she said she was. Even crazier, Olivia knew all along. So who is Quinn and what is happening with her this second season?

Well, the good news is we do find out who Quinn really is, the bad news is it could mean serious trouble for her. But at least she has Olivia on her side. I can’t say much more, but what I can say is that there will be a powerful scene between her and Olivia, so get ready.

Stephen’s Out

So Stephen’s (Henry Ian Cusick) gone. This might not come as a surprise to some of you since it was announced back in June that Henry Ian Cusick had left the show, but it does leave quite a bit of empty space to fill in the team.

Olivia is definitely affected by his departure and I have to admit I was a bit disappointed by how his exit was handled in the show. We only find out what happened to him through one line from Olivia, but we don’t get any type goodbye scene. Boo!

An Olivia and President Fitz Moment

We live for those don’t we?… No? Ok fine it’s only me then. But I cannot get enough of Olivia and President Fitz and while they have decided to keep their distances, I can tease that there will be a scene between the two in this episode.

Speaking of President Fitz, he will have his hands full dealing with Mellie (Bellamy Young) this season if the first episode is anything to go by. It was also announced back in June that Young had been promoted to a regular cast member, so get ready to see lots more of Mellie and her manipulative ways.

One of my favorite line of Fitz to Mellie in this episode is:

“You’re ornamental, not functional.”

It’s a pretty great scene, as you can imagine.

A New Client

Scandal wouldn’t be Scandal without its weekly does of … you guessed it… scandal. And so in this episode, Olivia and her team are hired by Senator Jacob Shaw (guest star Jackson Hurst) to prevent something very personal to leak to the press.

While the focal point of the episode is Quinn, Senator Shaw’s storyline was still very compelling because it showed Olivia at her best and that’s what we love to see on Scandal. In addition, it might even teach you a thing or two about how to handle your own scandal if you ever needed to.

A Big Twist

Well, I didn’t see that one coming!

In case the four previous points hadn’t gotten you excited enough, this one is certainly a big reason to watch the season 2 premiere. I of course cannot tell you what the big twist is, but know that there is one and it will inform the entire season. In fact, I was so shocked (and excited at the same time because of what it means) that I wished it was next Thursday already.

Shonda Rhimes has created yet another compelling series with Scandal but with a political setting, I think it can seduce a whole new type of audience than Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. So if you’re a political junky and enjoy finding out about crisis management, I would highly recommend you give Scandal a shot, I think you’ll most likely be hooked within an episode.

Scandal returns for its second season tonight, September 27th at 10pm on ABC.
