Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 Premiere “La O Na Makuahine” Review – Mommy’s Home

Hawaii Five-0 La O Na Makuahine Season 3 Episode 1

In the Hawaii Five-0 season 3 premiere, called “La O Na Makuahine” (which is Hawaiian for “Mother’s Day”), Steve reunites with his mother, the team fights two enemies at once and Chin deals with a devastating loss.

Before this episode aired, I watched the previews and interviews that came before it and in all of them, everyone said that the premiere was going to pick up right where we left off last season. Turns out they weren’t kidding. This one starts with Chin being forced to choose between his cousin and his wife and Steve seeing the mother than he thought had been for twenty years.

After that, it was another roller coaster ride that I’ve come to expect from this show. Steve’s story started out as a reunion but brought the action pretty fast. Turns out that sort of thing happens when your mom is an ex-spy who has been living under the cover identity of “Shelburne.” I felt for both of them as they struggled to figure out how to become mother and son again. I didn’t blame Steve for being pissed that she left him and basically caused his father’s murder, but nor could I blame Doris for doing what she needed to do to protect her family. If Steve had stopped to think about it, I’m sure he would’ve realized it’s exactly what he would have done as well.

As for Chin’s story, I pretty much knew that Malia was going to die so that part wasn’t a shocker. What this will mean for his character and what that emotional damage has already caused him to do; that’s the part that was hard to take. He’s tried so hard to prove that he’s not a dirty cop and yet things keep happening that force his hand that way. First the team has to steal money to save his life and now he’s killed an unarmed man. I’m not saying what he did was necessarily wrong, but I still know that it’s going to mess with him.

In addition to Steve and Chin’s stories, we only had a chance to barely touch on Danny’s continuing custody battle and Kono reuniting with Adam after he saved her life. But there’s only so much they can fit into one episode so I’m sure we’ll continue to see these stories played out as the season moves on. For now, I’m just very happy to have one of my favorite shows back.

My favorite bits..

Come on Kono!

Oh man, poor Chin.

“Since when does a son call his mother by her first name?”
“Since you failed to be one.”

That whole scene between Steve and his mother. Intense and beautifully done.

A helicopter coming along and picking up Wo-Fat’s entire transport truck. Now there’s a contingency I bet no one was prepared for. Or the part where they dropped it in the ocean. Seriously, WTF??

Delano broke him out?? *tries to stop head from spinning*

“Call me ‘mom’. Someone should.”

Doris and Danny talking in the car. I dare say that it was almost a cargument. Normally I don’t like those when they don’t involve Danny and Steve, but this one was actually quite hilarious. Doris calling Danny ‘smartass’ was classic.

“Yeah, watch your mouth Steven!’

Doris immediately figuring out that Catherine and her son were more than friends. Dang, she’s good.

“Chin, you tried to save us both.”
“Well, it wasn’t enough.”

“I would’ve thought that the woman who gave birth to the great warrior McGarrett would have horns and breathe fire.”

Aw, now I want to see pictures of baby Stevie in camouflage footsie pj’s. How freaking cute would that be??

“Do you know that the only thing I hate more than the ocean is the desert?” – Haha! Exactly how I feel.

I’m sorry, did Steve actually call Danny “Boo Boo”? I know that they live on an island, but surely Steve’s heard of Honey Boo Boo and would realize his partner would NOT want a name similar to hers.

Wow, you gotta hand it to Delano. Blowing up an entire building just so he could rob it later. Thatr’s pretty freaking brilliant.

The look on Chin’s face before he went after Delano said it all. I knew he was going to kill him, armed or not.

“Are you okay?”

“Sweetheart, I’ve been doing this since before you were born.” – I must have heard that line spoken in a thousand movies and TV shows, but that was the first time I heard it from a woman. Awesome.

Anyone else get suspicious when three shots went off but Wo-Fat was gone by the time Catherine got up the stairs?

Steve calling out “Mom!” as he ran up the stairs. Aw.

That whole entire scene when Chin walked back into his home. It was so heartbreakingly real for him to finally lose it when he saw dinner still in the oven. I think that’s where I would have lost it, too.

Aha, my suspicions were correct. Doris is hiding something..again.

What did you think of this episode of Hawaii Five-0? Got any favorite bits or least favorite bits of your own? I’d love to hear from you!
