Exclusive Interview: Castle’s Tamala Jones On Season 5 & Who She’d Pick As Her On-Screen Mother

TAMALA JONES Castle

Castle is bringing the heat this season with a certain relationship fans have been salivating for. Tamala Jones, who plays medical examiner Lanie Parish, took some time to talk to TV Equals about what fans can expect season 5, the status of the relationship between Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) and Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and who she would like to play Lanie’s mother. The season premiere of Castle airs tonight Monday, September 24 at 10/9c on ABC.

What do you like the most about playing your character?

Tamala Jones:  Well, I love a challenge, because I’ve never played a character before in my life, so this is all new. And, I just love the people that I love with more importantly. And I get to do things that I’ve never done before.

What do you think is the most exciting thing about this season of Castle?

Tamala Jones: This season is so much lighter and full of fun and the fans are getting what they want. They’ve been wanting Castle and Det. Beckett to hook up forever, and they finally did it. They get to see that but they have to know it’s a secret to the rest of us. None of us know. And I think that’s going to be the really fun part, watching us try to figure out who Beckett’s new boyfriend is, because we know she’s got somebody. She’s glowing–she’s got the sex glow on her–we’re just trying to figure out who it is. So I think that’s going to be the best part.

I’ve read that you have some other talents, such as bargain hunting and entertaining. Do you think that they’ll incorporate some of your other passions into your character eventually on Castle?

Tamala Jones: I hope they do. They’ve been really good with me so far,  as far as writing for Lanie. One thing I’d love to see, because I’m such a huge fan of hers, and I’ve had the opportunity to work with her one time, but it was too short–I would love if they could get Pam Grier to come on and be my mother and let that be a part of Lanie’s backstory. I just love Pam Grier, and that woman is spectacular. And Lanie, who is very much like a Foxy Brown character in the medical field, along with the original Foxy Brown, would just be crazy for me.

If you could guest star on any other show, which show would that be?

Tamala Jones:  Ooh, that’s a good one! Can I say two?

Yeah.

Tamala Jones:  I would do Modern Family, because I love Miss Sophia [Vergara], and I would do True Blood. So I’ve got a comedy and a drama I would do. I love True Blood.
