Bones “The Future in the Past” Advance Review: 5 Spoiler-Free Reasons to Watch

Bones The Future in the Past Season 8 Premiere

Tonight’s Bones season 8 premiere, called “The Future in the Past,” reminded me just how much I love this show. Last season at the end of my review I remember asking “is it fall yet?” because that ending was so tense, I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. But then life happened and summer happened and soon I had forgotten what it was like to watch my favorite shows on TV every week.

But within just a few minutes of watching this premiere, I couldn’t imagine going without having Bones on my TV screen every week. Though it’s not technically fall in my town yet (we had temps in the 100’s over the weekend, ugh), I am happy to say that the calendar says it is and brought Bones back to us.

There are so many things I would love to say about this episode as it definitely up there with some of my favorites now. But since I can’t spoil anything, I’ll just give you a few reasons why I think you should watch.

Each reunion is better than the last

One look at the batch of Bones season 8 premiere photos and you know that Booth and Bones are going to be reunited. What you won’t know is exactly when they will be or how, but I can tell you that their moment happens in a way that you may not expect.

But it’s not just Booth and Bones’ reunion that make this episode; there are a few others as well. Many people on the team have been split up thanks to the deviousness that is Pelant and as the episode progresses, we see people come back together slowly but surely. Each one of these reunions I found more touching than the last and it was great to get everyone pretty much back where they belonged be by the end of the episode.

Some people have changed more than you might expect after all this

This whole Pelant case has twisted our familiar little world on Bones and I think we are going to see ramifications of that for a while to come. People have had to do things they didn’t want to do and it has changed some of them.

What happens with Hodgins in particular was something I found very intriguing. It made me wonder if this is something that we will continue to see in his character throughout the rest of the season, or if it will be written off as a one-off thing. Personally I’m hoping for the former because that one moment showed us a side of him I don’t think we’ve ever really seen before and I was fascinated by it.

There are some additions to the team

When the episode starts, we see that some people are gone and others not being allowed to do the jobs that they are meant to. This left holes in the team that were filled by some familiar faces and by the end of the episode, it’s fairly obvious that some of these people are going to be sticking around.

Whether or not they stay forever or just for a while, it’s hard to tell but so far I’m enjoying the additions to the team and I think that they could add quite a bit to the stories and character interactions on the show.

Another great musical montage

It’s just not an episode of Bones without a musical montage, and this one in particular was especially good. Maybe it’s just because I liked the song and what they were doing when it was playing, but I really felt like it was a perfect moment. The way it ended was absolutely fantastic; the music was still playing so it all happened without dialogue and I loved seeing how much was communicated with just a few looks.

The absolute biggest twist ending, like, ever

To say that I didn’t see the ending coming was an understatement. All I can say about it without giving anything away is that if you were planning to leave the room during the last 5 minutes of the episode, you might want to rethink that. Something happens that changes everything and when I say everything, I mean everything. Wow, just….wow.

The Bones season 8 premiere airs tonight at 8/7c on FOX. Once you’ve seen the episode, come back up and let me know what you thought. I love hearing from you guys!
