Joss Whedon to Help Develop Live Action Series for Marvel Television

According to Deadline, Joss Whedon, the man behind the TV shows ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, ‘Angel’, ‘Firefly’ [among others] and the online web series ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog’, will not only be back to write and direct the sequel to ‘The Avengers’ but he will also help Marvel Television develop a new live action series. It is reported that he will also “contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe”.

It is unclear at this time, though, whether Whedon will be involved with the ‘The Avengers’-themed drama Marvel and ABC already have in the works, but he will definitely “develop a series involving Marvel characters as Disney continues to make the most out of its $4 billion acquisition of the superhero factory”.

It is also said that any “connection between the TV project and the box office film will be loose at best, using some of its themes and feel, but not necessarily the same characters”.

ABC has been attempting to bring a series to TV based on characters from the Marvel universe for quite some time, but – to date – has not completed that goal; but that could very well change with this new project. There is a Hulk-inspired reboot in the works, but as of right now a new writer is being sought to make the adaptation from comic to small screen while the Marvel character Jessica Jones was in development by ‘Twilight’ writer Melissa Rosenberg, but that project wasn’t picked up by the network.

Given the overwhelming success of the box office feature, there will be a lot of high hopes for the small screen version that is for sure.
