Alphas’ Erin Way Talks Being The New Girl, Annoying Gary & Loving Sci-Fi

Alphas - Season 2 Erin Way as Kat

Erin Way is the newest addition to the popular SyFy series Alphas. During a recent conference call, TV Equals was on hand to learn more about her character, Kat, as well as Kat’s relationship with other Alphas, Way’s love of science fiction, and the possible loophole in her character.

Kat as a character

Way described Kat as a woman with an extraordinary ability that takes its toll on her mind. “Her special ability is that she can basically learn any skill instantly. That includes knowledge and muscle memory,” said Way. “The only downside is that she has a bit of a memory problem. So after about a month or so, she’s losing memories of the past. So while she retains the [abilities], she can’t remember how she learned them…or where she came from.”

While the rest of the Alpha team are quite serious in tone, Kat comes in and shakes everything up, according to Way.

“Because of the downside of her ability, the way she’s chosen to survive with it is to live in the moment, not get too heavy about stuff. She’s not burdened by anything in the past. So essentially she just comes in and really kind of mixes it up,” said Way. “She doesn’t really care about the rules, the protocol, how you’re supposed to behave, kind of makes fun of them for being so serious and because of that, she ruffles everybody’s feathers a bit.” Way said that Kat’s effervescent way of life might cause some of the Alphas to see their situation from a different perspective.

What attracted Way to the character

What made Way really fall in love with Kat was the character’s toughness. “She’s a very strong female character that I not only enjoy watching, but I enjoy playing,” said Way.
She also talked about how she liked how Kat’s power would allow her to learn a new power each week. “I’m never going to get bored with this girl,” said Way when she explained why she was attracted to the character.

How Kat relates to Gary

“I think [Kat] has rubbed [Gary] the wrong way the most out of anybody,” said Way when describing her character’s relationship with Gary (Ryan Cartwright). “That should be expected; Gary is somebody that relies upon routine and protocol…and doesn’t enjoy people breaking his routine.”

Way said that Kat is not the type of person who will do what she’s told when it comes to interacting with Gary; if she is told not to bother Gary’s routine, that will make her want to do the complete opposite. “She is constantly touching Gary, trying to hug Gary, basically doing everything that you will tell her not to do…it’s very upsetting, he doesn’t like it at all.”
Gary and Kat do eventually end up on each other’s good side, said Way.

“It’s not a smooth road by the end, [Kat] still manage[s] to upset him on occasion,” she said. “But there are a few occasions where, because of [Kat’s] irreverence for his condition and who he is…she kind of trusts Gary with facts that other people would not, and he kind of grows to like her a little bit because she’s willing to let him do things that other people won’t let him do because she doesn’t care about the rules. I see a good future for Kat and Gary. I think we’re going to be fine.”

Way’s love of sci-fi

Way is also a big fan of sci-fi, and talked about some sci-fi titles she would have loved to have been a part of, including shows made by one of the hottest names in sci-fi right now.

“It’s so cliché, but I’m a huge ‘Buffy,’ ‘Firefly,’ ‘Dollhouse’ [fan], so Joss Whedon for sure,” said Way. “Any show that he does I don’t even doubt that I’m going to like it.”

Way also said she’d love to work with the cast of the new “Doctor Who” because she’s an Anglophile. “I have very good sources telling me it’s a really good show,” she said, having mentioned running into Matt Smith at Comic-Con. “And British people are on it and I’m a little bit of an Anglophile.”

If it were possible, she said, she would also liked to have worked on the original Star Wars trilogy. She loves the trilogy so much that she and her family went to extreme fandom lengths.

“My brothers, myself, my family dog and my parents all did a remake of all three movies,” she said. “We mashed them into one movie and took two summers and made our own version. It’s going to make its way to YouTube, I can feel it in my bones.”

Make sure to catch Way’s debut as Kat on this Monday’s episode of Alphas, “Alpha Dog,” airing on SyFy at 10/9c. For more from Erin, also check out the video interview below we did at Comic-Con 2012.
