Covert Affairs Season 3 Premiere “Hang on to Yourself” Advance Review – Massive Changes Ahead

Covert Affairs

USA’s hit spy series Covert Affairs returns tonight for its third season opener, called “Hang on to Yourself,” and after watching it last night all I can say is……wow.

Now I have the great challenge of trying to convey to you folks just why the episode generated that response, but without giving away any spoilers. Okay, here goes..

So the one thing I know I can talk about is the fact that yes, someone does indeed die in this episode. USA has pretty much plastered that all over their previews so I know I’m not giving anything away with that. When I saw those previews, I actually thought I figured out who it would be, but I was (pardon the pun) dead wrong. The only thing I will tell you about the death is that you won’t have to wait too long to find out who the team will lose.

The loss, as you can expect, leaves everyone reeling but it also puts into action a lot of changes. Annie and Auggie in particular go through some major upheavals. Auggie ends up more stressed than we’ve ever seen him before. The changes that come from the death put a ton of pressure on his shoulders and I think it will mean we’re going to see a lot more interesting things from his character this season, which has me pretty excited since he’s always been my favorite.

As for Annie, the changes leave her in a whole new situation as well. Don’t worry, she’s still doing the same job (and in that way that is so uniquely her), but there are both more pressures and more freedoms for her. The case that she gets put on seems like it’s going to be just a run-of-the-mill mission but as things move on, we find out that it’s a lot bigger than we thought and has farther reaching affects. Judging by the last few minutes of the episode, my guess is that what happens in the season premiere is going to keep on affecting all the characters throughout much of the season, which is something that we haven’t seen too much on this show before.

I have to say that when I started hearing about the big changes that were coming for Covert Affairs, I was a little nervous about what that could mean for one of my favorite summer shows. I wondered how different it was going to be, if it was going to feel like a whole new show (and not in a good way), and if the characters would change. The truth is that all of the changes I’ve seen so far have made a definite improvement on the show. As for the characters, they are all exactly who we remember them to be, just in slightly different situations. And it’s these new situations that I think will bring on some great character developments this season. Perhaps things were getting a little too familiar, a little too easy for Annie and the rest of the team, but after watching this season premiere, I doubt anything will be easy for any of them this season.

The season four premiere of Covert Affairs airs tonight at 10pm on USA Network. Once you’ve seen the episode, come back here and let me know what you thought of it. I love hearing from you guys!
