Rookie Blue “The First Day of the Rest of Your Life” Review

Rookie Blue Season Premiere 2012 The First Day of the Rest of Your Life (3)
This season of Rookie Blue picked up three months after last season and gave us a guest appearance from Captain Kirk himself in the aptly titled episode, “The First Day of the Rest of Your Life.” For Andy, that first day meant her first day back on the job after her suspension, a return she celebrated by skydiving. Something tells me she hasn’t completely changed after 12 weeks off.

She definitely hasn’t completely gotten over Sam…and he certainly hasn’t gotten over her. He also hasn’t forgiven her for abiding by the instructions that she should stay away from him during her leave. Love is supposed to conquer all, but it seems like Andy was all too willing to put the job first.

Of course, she doesn’t apply that same pragmatism to following the rule that she not get involved in a case until after a tribunal clears her to return to the force. When Sam is driving her back from the airport, they get into a pile-up which leads them to a girl who had been missing for seven years. Her grandfather, played by William Shatner, had created the accident because he saw his missing granddaughter in the back of a man’s van.

I have to say, the kidnapping case really managed to capture my interest. As it turned out, the man who was driving the van wasn’t the kidnapper; just a good Samaritan who was trying to help the girl escape her real abuser, a sick man who, of course, thought she was in love with him after seven years of forced captivity. Shatner did a great job; he really is such a better actor than he sometimes gets credit for being.

Back at the station, Gail finds that the latest rookie is a blast from her past. Noelle is still pregnant, but it seems like she’s still keeping it under wraps. As to who the father is…signs still point to Frank. Traci still doesn’t like Gail, so nothing new there.

Summer is over, kids. It’s time to get back to work. Will Andy and Sam ever be able to work it out, and if they do, will they be allowed to be together? Noelle’s going to start to show soon; will she have to answer some uncomfortable questions about her baby’s parentage? And what about the new guy? Will he bring balance or upset it? Stay tuned…
