‘Smash’ Cleans House for Season 2 May 23, 2012 News As many are saying since the announcement broke…let the bloodbath begin. Four characters on the NBC series Smash are expected to leave the show when the musical drama returns next fall for its second season. And, their departures will undoubtedly not be disappointing to many of the viewers of the series. Who is leaving, you ask? Well, according to Entertainment Weekly, philandering fiancé Dev (Raza Jaffrey) and devious assistant Ellis (Jaime Cepero) will no longer be regular cast members on the show, but it is possible one or both actors could appear in an episode or two to wrap up their storylines. The plan is to have neither character as a recurring presence in the show’s new-and-improved second season. Additionally, Julia’s (Debra Messing) husband Frank (Brian d’Arcy James) and Julia’s former lover Michael (Will Chase) are leaving as well. That last fact will, assuredly, create problems for the musical within a musical, as Michael was Joe DiMaggio in “Bombshell”. ‘Smash’ is expected to return to NBC during mid-season (i.e., next year), which will give new showrunner Josh Safran (Gossip Girl) the chance to make over the show or at least that is the hope of critics and viewers alike.
