NBC’s chairman of Entertainment, Robert Greenblatt, has announced that the network has decided to pick up a second season of the breakout hit musical series Smash. Called “a lively show with a lot of promise” by EW, Smash’s ratings has earned the number one spot on NBC’s list of dramas for viewers between the ages of 18 to 49.

The series first debuted on February 6th and has since reeled in viewers, increasing its ratings by 160% with a storyline that chronicles striving performers and their life in the competitive and high stress land of Broadway. The story is also loosely based on the “life of Marilyn Monroe, and seasoned chorus girl Ivy Lynn.”

‘Smash’ stars Debra Messing of ‘Will and Grace’ fame, Christian Borle (Legally Blonde: The Musical), long time actress Anjelica Huston (Prizzi’s Honor) Megan Hilty (9 to 5: The Musical), and Katherine McPhee, who is best known from her performances as a contestant on ‘American Idol’. Michael Mayer directed the first three episodes of the show’s freshman series.

‘Smash’ is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, David Marshall Grant, Theresa Rebeck, Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Mark Shaiman, and Scott Wittman. Are you excited over the renewal of the series. Drop us your comments below.
