Supernatural Thursdays – Celebrating Castiel’s Return: An Essay (Sort of)

Okay, Supernatural fans! We’re on another break from Supernatural and with
Sam cracking up and actually talking to Lucifer I don’t know how I”m going to wait until mid March… how about you guys?

Despite that all I want to do is talk about Sam and what Sam is going through and how he’s going to deal with Lucifer firmly embedded in his head now that he was stupid enough (sorry, Sam) to let him in… I think we can all agree that the preview for the return episode of Supernatural showed a much more exciting plot point.

Before I go further – be warned that this installment of Supernatural Thursday will include spoilers for upcoming episodes. You have been fairly warned.

For those of us that don’t care about spoilers and for those of us that saw the preview – CASTIEL IS BACK! We don’t know how, we don’t know why, hell, we don’t even know if it’s actually Castiel or Jimmy, but we DO know that in some form Castiel is back.

Which is why, dear reader, I believe we should devote this week’s column to our favorite rebellious angel. So sit back, relax, and let’s talk about Castiel.

Is He Or Is He Not Castiel?

First thing’s first. We know Misha Collins is back. We also know (from various spoilers) that he is not wearing Castiel’s trade mark trench coat when he appears. Add this to an interview that I watched where Jensen (bless his beautiful heart, the boy just doesn’t keep spoilers under wraps well) basically says that Cas is back but may not know that he’s actually Castiel.

So. This means that we could have a situation similar to “The Rapture” from season four when Cas vacated Jimmy’s body and left the poor guy faithless and very, VERY confused. Now if that happens, it’ll be up to Dean (I assume) to figure out how to snap Cas back to reality.

Since I mentioned Dean…

How Is Dean Going To React?

No, really. How is Dean going to react to the return of Castiel or non-Castiel? Since Cas’ death by leviathan drowning, Dean has been trying to find his solace in the bottom of a bottle of whiskey. We’ve discussed a few times how Dean is barley hanging on by a thread and how the slightest thing is going to push him over the edge. I feel that Castiel returning and not remembering anything could be the straw that breaks Dean’s back.

Cas is really Dean’s only friend. He’s a constant that Dean could turn to for support – even if Castiel didn’t always offer the best advice or what Dean wanted to hear. Truthfully, my heart breaks for Dean when he sees the return of Castiel.

Will Everything We Love About Castiel Come Back With Him?

I’ve heard people say that Castiel is one of the worst characters in Supernatural. That he’s one dimensional, has no story arch, and is just a waste. Now, I’m not saying that I’ve been a Castiel fan from the start – I’ve written several pieces about Castiel sometimes being a third wheel for the boys, however I’ve never once thought that he was a throw away character.

Castiel has so many things that he brings to Supernatural that no one else could. His child like naivety is the first thing that pops into my head. He’s this warrior that is trained to smite and follow orders, but he can’t use a cell phone.

He’s saved Sam and Dean’s lives more than anyone that I can think of, Bobby included. He brought Dean back from hell. He brought Bobby back from the Dead. Hell, he brought Sam back from hell when he was locked up with freaking Lucifer! While he may try to hide things from his surrogate family, ultimately Castiel really does love those stupid boys and will do anything he can for them.

Hence the leviathan death.

Before I make us all kinds of depressed, let’s stop the Castiel recap with something happy. Castiel is probably the funniest character on Supernatural, guest stars and one-off characters aside.

I know we’re all putting a lot of faith in the writers with Castiel’s return, and I have to say that I’m a little nervous about the outcome! What are your thoughts? Will Castiel’s reappearance be a happy one?
