Psych “Indiana Shawn and the Temple of the Kinda Crappy, Rusty Old Dagger” Advance Review

Okay so I don’t know about any of you folks, but I loved Indiana Jones as a kid. In fact my friends and I used to play Raiders all the time and we always fought over who go to be Indy. I didn’t care that I was a girl, I still wanted to be the one to beat up the bad guys and saved the day.

In tonight’s winter premiere of Psych, Shawn and Gus get to fulfill that childhood fantasy. The episode is aptly titled “Indiana Shawn and the Temple of the Kinda Crappy, Rusty Old Dagger” and does in fact feature Indiana Shawn, a sort of Temple and yes, a kinda crappy old dagger. Everything else that you’d expect in a Raiders parody was there, too – the music, the moving maps, the bullwhip, a legend that needs to be solved, an awesome boat chase, secret passageways, hidden doors – all of it.

Sad to say it’s not all fun and games though. Shawn has to deal with mortality in a way he doesn’t expect and it’s a little more than he can bear. He even tries to deny that anything has happened, turning away from death just like he did when he was a kid. When he does finally come to terms with the truth it forces him to face reality and realize that life it’s always a fun game.

It’s yet another sign that our boys are becoming men…well, almost. I don’t think they’ll ever give up being big kids at heart. All in all I found this episode to be a total blast and probably the most fun parody they’ve done so far, at least for me. Unlike some of the other send-ups they’ve done, I have an intimate knowledge of the reference in this one, which made it that much more fun.

My favorite non-spoilery bits..

John Rhys-Davies playing a curator of a museum and somehow looking like he hasn’t aged a day in more than (gulp, has it been that long?) thirty years.

“Really? You’re gonna threaten him by quoting ‘Back to the Future’?”

Learning a lot more about Gus and his bladder than I ever wanted to know.

Shawn looking awesome in his Indiana Jones outfit.

Gus claiming that he has not only a work phone but a “playa” phone. Ja, right.

Shawn and Gus swinging from a bullwhip.

“We’re seamen!”
“Stop saying that! Anyone could be walking by!”

“Lassiter, please. Pretend you’re a person.”

Finding out that both Shawn and Gus are afraid of raccoons.

Shawn and Gus getting into the Best. Fight. Ever.

A tour guide not only carrying a riding crop, but using it on Shawn.

“My skeleton is not going to be a punch line Shawn.”

A final reveal that is pretty spectacular.

Don’t forget, the winter premiere of Psych airs tonight at 10/9c on USA Network. Once you’ve watched the episode, be sure to come back up and let us know what you thought. I love hearing from you guys!
