Actor Jonny Lee Miller (‘Eli Stone’) and actress Lucy Liu (‘Southland’) have been cast in the lead roles of Sherlock Holmes and Watson in the CBS drama pilot called Elementary – the network’s modernized retelling of the classic characters that is up for consideration for the 2012-2013 TV season.

This new version of the famed detective saga will be set in New York City, but few other details are available as yet on the pilot that will be written by Robert Doherty (‘Medium’) and directed by Michael Cuesta (‘Homeland’); both of whom will serve as Executive Producers on the potential series alongside Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly (both from ‘A Gifted Man’).

Viewers will recognize Miller from his recent turn on ‘Dexter’ as well as the made-for-TV movie ‘Emma’ and the box office films ‘Trainspotting’, ‘Hackers’ (alongside his former wife Angelina Jolie) and ‘Aeon Flux’. He will also soon be seen in the anticipated film adaptation of the classic TV series ‘Dark Shadows’, starring alongside Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Meanwhile, Liu is best known for her role on the TV series ‘Ally McBeal’, but also starred in the short-lived shows ‘Cashmere Mafia’ and ‘Dirty Sexy Money’ and the recent made-for-TV mini-series ‘Marry Me’. She also appeared in the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ theatrical reboot alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore, ‘Kill Bill, Vol. 1’ and provided her voice for the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ franchise.
