The Secret Circle “Witness” Review

In this week’s The Secret Circle, Cassie bears ‘Witness’ (see what I did there?) to the ferry fire which supposedly killed the previous circle fifteen years ago. A very young Jake had followed his parents and saw the events immediately preceding the fire, as well as the start of the fire itself, and by channelling his memories Cassie is able to view them as if she were there at the time.

We learn that the previous circle had gone to the ferry in hopes of calling a truce with the witch hunters who wanted them dead. The hunters killed the witches who wanted the truce and left the others alive. Then they tied up John Blackwell, surrounded him with iron filings, and tried to burn him to death. But Blackwell – with the help of a pendant – resisted the flames and left the witch hunters to burn.

There were a couple of notable points in the tale, too. Jake’s mother mentions to his father that Amelia didn’t trust John after he betrayed her, which presumably means we can rule out Jake as Cassie’s half-brother completely. The witch hunters only killed those inside the ferry, not the ones up on deck — i.e. Dawn and Charles. And it looks as though Adam’s father, Ethan, may have been working alongside the witch hunters.

That last point isn’t really surprising when you think that Ethan was in love with Amelia. It makes sense that he would work alongside the witch hunters to get rid of the ‘evil’ John Blackwell, not knowing that his friends would die too. Could it be that guilt that drove him to drink? (Speaking of Ethan, it’s nice to see him become part of the power play between the previous circle members now that he’s back on the wagon.)

So now the circle know what really happened on the ferry, and Cassie has a potential way of protecting herself. But the dark magic won’t just disappear. Can we assume that Cassie will now start a search for John Blackwell, to learn more about her dark magic and find out whether he ever managed to rid himself of his own?

Perhaps more importantly, who was the girl that could see Cassie and tried to lead her out? Was she one of the circle who managed to escape and had abilities similar to Cassie’s? Or is she someone from the present who was viewing events too?

Meanwhile, Faye met an old ‘friend’ of Lee’s who gave her a sample of a drug, Devil’s Spirit, which sounds like it could potentially free her magic from the bonds of the circle — at least temporarily.

And if that wasn’t enough, Adam got all protective of Cassie, Jake’s in love with Cassie, and Lee seemed to be showing his fair share of affection toward Faye, too. One thing’s for sure — no matter how bad things get for folks on CW shows, there’s no shortage of love interests at the door!
