Private Practice “Are You My Mother” Review

Private Practice is back and we’re back on the couch. I’m glad they jumped over what would have been Addison’s meltdown over not convincing and went right to her adoption plans. I love the social worker’s visit if only because she pointed out the ocean could be a drowning hazard. In my book a house on the beach is a check in your favor if I’m deciding whether or not to get you a baby.

I also enjoyed the total role reversal of a vulnerable Amelia getting shut down by Sheldon, until Charlotte advised him to stay away. I get that Amelia might not be in the best place to start a new relationship, but it also seems like she could really use a friend and isn’t in a good state of mind to be constantly rejected.

The polyamorous triad sub-plot was interesting not so much for their story but because it highlighted how judgemental all the Private Practice doctors can be when their own love lives are twice as weird. It also showed, yet again, why all their licences should be pulled; they just keep ignoring doctor-patient confidentiality. Only two doctors at the practice are treating the triad, so only two should be discussing them. if they need a general topic of discussion, maybe they should all watch the same reality show the night before work and agree to talk about that.

Cooper’s mini Coop swiping a pack of cards from the toy shop would have been a throw away subplot if it hadn’t been for his burn in the face of punishment, “You’re not my dad, your just a guy who got my mom pregnant.” I thought the kid was years away from using that one.

At this point I have no idea what’s going on with Violet and Pete. I thought they’d made a permanent break, but the way they kept talking about the future and what might happen between them down the line it seems like they’re thinking they might get back together. Maybe Pete’s waiting for her hair to grow out.

I wasn’t surprised Addison didn’t get the college student’s baby in the end, but I was shocked by how the whole thing played out. I expected the girl to decide to keep the baby, and even though that would have been painful I feel like Addison would have to, on some level, expect that reaction after she actually holds her daughter. But telling her she’s going to give the baby to the stay at home mom so she’ll have more attention and a father just seemed cruel. And while she might have had a point if she was talking to the Grey’s doctors who only leave Seattle Grace about once a year, Addison has plenty of down time to sip wine and gaze sadly at the ocean that could easily be converted into playtime.

What was really important about “Are You My Mother” was it finally made the Addison and Sam split. It was getting incredibly awkward to watch them dance around the glaring issue of the baby, and a clean break means they can both get into more interesting (at least for the audience) relationships.

What did you think of tonight’s episode? Will Addison ever get a baby?
