THE BIG BANG THEORY “The Good Guy Fluctuation” Review

THE BIG BANG THEORY “The Good Guy Fluctuation” Season 5 Episode 7 – When I think about The Big Bang Theory and Halloween, I think back to the first season when the boys attended Penny’s party in full geek costume. My, how far they’ve come… This year’s holiday episode, “The Good Guy Fluctuation” is less about dressing up and more about scaring the poop out of Sheldon. Which is funny, but in a totally different way.

It’s not hard to get the best of Sheldon when it comes to practical jokes; he walks into set-ups with the greatest of ease. But for all of his smarts, he simply can’t seem to play any jokes of his own in retribution. Putting a snake in Raj’s desk drawer is a wasted effort when you consider that Raj grew up with cobras in his backyard. And I’m not exactly sure how Bernadette and Howard knew to turn Sheldon’s hand-buzzer around on him by pretending to have Howard’s heart stop and making Sheldon stab him in the chest with a fake syringe, but it was a great gag.

Still, sometimes the scare isn’t so much in the set-up as it is the timing. Who knows how long Sheldon would have had to bunker down in the couch itself waiting for the right moment, when his roommate’s defenses were down, to pounce out in full zombie makeup, but it was worth it to finally get Leonard to jump out of his skin.

As to why Leonard let his guard down, it all started in the comic book store when he got hit on by a hot chick/artist, Alice. Okay, I’m getting a teensy bit offended by the show’s constant insinuation that no hot girls ever go into comic book stores. My friends (two of whom happen to be hot girls) own a comic book store in San Diego (Villainous Lair Comics—check them out on Facebook!) and I can tell you, beautiful geek girls go in there all the time. I’ve decided to blame the use of this old-school cliche on Stuart’s lingering bitterness over having lost Penny to Leonard. Ever since then, he’s been a real downer. I wouldn’t go into his store, either.

Leonard is faced with a moral decision. To cheat or not to cheat. Leonard just doesn’t have it in him to cheat; good guys never do. So, he loses Alice, which is a shame…I would have liked to have seen a real geek girl on The Big Bang Theory. (Amy and Bernadette are smart, but they’re not geek girls; there’s a distinction.) But then, like the good guy that he is, Leonard confesses his almost-cheating to Priya…only to learn that she REALLY cheated on him a few weeks earlier.

Not sure if they’re officially over, but it seems like the romance of their long-distance relationship has died, and not a moment too soon as far as I’m concerned. I never really liked Priya once she told Leonard to stop talking to Penny. Good girls don’t do that.

Best Lines:

Sheldon: Oh, the walls are dripping blood…which looks nothing like a phenolphthalein indicator exposed to a sodium carbonate solution! (reading the wall) “See You In Hell Sheldon.” The most frightening thing about that is the missing comma!

Howard: (to Leonard) Did I just see you pick up a girl in a comic book store?
Stuart: ‘Cause if you did you get your picture up there on the wall of heroes.

Leonard: (looking at her autobiographical comic) There’s you having sex with a guy in the top half of a Chewbacca costume. (pause) Comic-con?
Alice: You’d think, but no.

Sheldon: You know, the German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche believed that morality is just a fiction used by the herd of inferior human beings to hold back the few superior men.
Leonard: That actually does help.
Sheldon: It’s worth noting that he died of syphilis.

What did you think of the episode? Are Leonard and Priya over? Will this pave the way for Leonard and Penny: Round 2? Let me know below!!
