COMMUNITY “Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps” Review

COMMUNITY “Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps” Season 3 Episode 5 – While following up what was possibly the best Community episode of all time two weeks ago with “Remedial Chaos Theory”, and you’d think it would be tough to follow this week. Thankfully, Community has always had great Halloween episodes, and “Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps” was no exception. This episode was hilarious.

The funniest part was that it was so similar to the last episode in a lot of ways. Just like how last episode gave every character their own arc, we now get a scary story told from the perspective of each of the group in order to tell which one of them is a homicidal maniac. And just like last episode, there was so much great stuff here that it’s hard to pick a favorite. Britta’s terrible narration, Shirley’s self-righteous eternal damnation of the rest of the group, and Pierce’s playboy story that included punching Troy in the face with his penis. Everything here was so effective, but nothing was quite on the same level as the Human Centipede send up involving Pierce as the crazy surgeon sewing Troy and Abed together. The fact that Pierce immediately thought of putting his butt on his chest was equivalent to having boobs he can play with all day was incredible, but then realizing he had feet for hands and hands for feet was the icing on the cake. The line after Troy was done telling this story where he yells “feet hands!” to himself great.

Just like last episode, Troy’s arc was the funniest. Annie’s was ok, but a little too one-note for the character. It wasn’t surprising that she gets the prissy, Pride and Prejudice-esque story between her and Jeff. The only reason that Shirley’s story didn’t come off irritating is because it was saved by the hilarious appearance of the Dean as the devil. Seeing Jim Shelton dressed up like the devil, waving a chainsaw around screaming “GAY MARRIAGE” is a sight that will not leave my brain for a while.

Overall this was yet another incredible episode of Community, and shows us that the show really is back on track in season 3. Let’s hope we get even more genius in next week’s episode.

Troy and Abed sewn togeeeeeether!

Random Thoughts:

– The radio broadcasts in the episode were great. With Britta’s always stumbling over his words and Shirley’s condemning the group passive aggressively. It’s the small details like this that make this show so hilarious.

– Just about everything that the devil dean said made me crack up. “Pilates is the devil that eats your genitals” and “GAY MARRIAGE!” had me rolling on the floor.

– I was a bit surprised that Abed was the normal one, but it was so great how the crew just agreed to never find out who’s test it was.
