THE BIG BANG THEORY “The Russian Rocket Reaction” Review

THE BIG BANG THEORY “The Russian Rocket Reaction” Season 5 Episode 5 – In the interest of full disclosure, I feel compelled to mention that I am a full-fledged Trekkie. I’m so much of a Trekkie that I don’t care about being called a Trekkie. So when I heard that this week’s episode of The Big Bang Theory, “The Russian Rocket Reaction,” would guest star both Wil Wheaton AND Brent Spiner, I nearly got a nose-bleed from pure joy.

Let me just say that although I was worried as the clock crept closer to 8:30 and Mr. Data still hadn’t appeared, the scene was so completely worth the wait.

Not that rest of the episode wasn’t great. Howard finds out that not only is a piece of equipment he helped design is going up to the International Space Station, he’s been invited to go up on Russian rocket to install it. Howard Wolowitz is going to be an astronaut.

Well…not if Bernadette has her way. Can you blame the girl? A few months before her wedding, her fiancee (who can’t make it through a ride at Disneyworld without puking) has just announced that he’s going into space with a bunch of former Communists. I think all girls can understand her anger.

But what she did next really made me love her even more. Instead of fighting, Bernadette informs Howard’s mother of his plans. NASA be damned; Howard’s mom won’t let him go to Las Vegas, much less the ISS. I hope the wedding happens because Bernadette is exactly what Howard needs—a woman who knows about his mommy issues and loves him anyway. He’s never, ever going to do better.

Speaking of things getting better, every episode with Wil Wheaton is a winner in my book and I don’t just say that because I once informed my mother that I wanted to run away to Starfleet Academy to be with him (which at ten meant that I wanted to hold his hand and listen to his theories on how to boost the plasma flow into the warp nacelles).

But add Brent Spiner into the mix…if you don’t produce comic gold, you’re not doing it right.

When Wil Wheaton invites the guys to a party at his house, I figured he had some sort of scheme in mind to bug the crap out of Sheldon, but it turns out he’s gotten a little less evil. He even gives Sheldon his last mint-condition Wesley Crusher action figure as a peace offering.

Along comes Brent Spiner who grabs it, rips it open and defiles it with his delicious on-set memories. Brilliant.

Sheldon has a new mortal enemy. Please…if there is anyone listening to me…let that mean that we will see more of Data on The Big Bang Theory. I have not laughed so hard during the show since Wil Wheaton’s very first appearance.

The episode was everything I hoped it would be. My only complaint would be that there could have been more of the guest stars. But again, I’m a Trekkie.

Live long and prosper.

Best Lines:

Stuart: Oh great, more guys. It’ll be another Wil Wheaton sausage fest.

Bernandette: Are those Russian rockets safe?
Howard: As safe as anything can be that was built by the same people who brought you Chernobyl.

Howard’s Mom: Your tuhkas is not leaving this planet!

Brent Spiner: (re: Star Trek action figures) Remember how we used to make these things look like they were masturbating?

Sheldon: (to Brent Spiner) From now on, you are my mortal enemy.
Wil Wheaton: Don’t worry; it doesn’t take up a whole lot of your time.
