MODERN FAMILY “Hit and Run” Review

MODERN FAMILY “Hit and Run” Season 3, Episode 5 – There must have been some kind of cosmic alignment in the Modern Family universe which caused local jerks to be drawn towards a member of the Pritchett/Dunphy family this week.

That invisible tractor beam of bad attitude had to be the explanation for Claire’s multiple unpleasant run-ins with her Puggle-breeding nemesis from the city council, Duane Bailey, and I have to assume that it was the reason Jay was forced to pitch to a particularly obnoxious client. And clearly, that gravitational pull has to be the reason that Cam and Mitch were the victims of a hit-and-run while Hayley was the sucker in an attempted misdemeanor gone awry.

Or maybe it was just a bad day.

Phil’s attraction to women like Oprah, Condoleezza Rice, Serena Williams and Michelle Obama was a driving force in his initial support of Claire’s bid to run for the town council. Unfortunately, he figured out a little too late that his attraction wasn’t exactly to “women in power” and before he knew it, he was in over his head as the stay-at-home-dad. In the few moments that Phil was on his own, Hayley had been scammed out of $900 (that she borrowed from Luke’s hilarious $1,217 ice cube stash), Alex was in an antihistamine induced coma and Luke had nearly lost an eye. All things considered, he could have done worse.

Gloria delivered some of the most ridiculous lines in this episode of Modern Family with a brilliant seriousness. Her “beaverization” of America explanation to Jay and Manny was such an obvious joke, but it still made me snicker as she detailed the destruction and tree damage caused by beavers in America. Her beauty pageant story made me laugh out loud and remember how much I love that she never realizes how grim all her stories are.

Although Jay would never agree that Gloria has all the answers, she definitely has a number of assets that Jay lacks. I’m sure all you Sofia Vergara fans were pleased with Jay’s “wow factor” in his revamped pitch to that irritating client, Josh.

Previously on Modern Family, Cam had been screaming in the streets for Stella. This week he was screaming in the name of justice after being rear ended on the way home from watching a movie with Mitchell. I’m grateful that Cam and Mitchell’s accident was cause for more of Cam screaming in the streets because I can not control my laughter when he shouts at the top of his lungs.

Despite all their encounters with these loathsome folks, the Pritchetts and the Dunphys stuck together to come out on top in the end. I mean that both figuratively and somewhat literally as Jay, Phil, Cam and Mitchell ultimately combined their forces to tackle and pin Hayley’s criminal swindler to the ground.

The fact that they always come through for one another makes it so easy to believe that the Pritchetts and the Dunphys could be just like our own families in some ways. No matter how much they bicker, this Modern Family works together when the Universe decides to give them a hard time and that is exactly what family is supposed to do.
