NCIS: LOS ANGELES “Deadline” Review

NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS) Deadline

NCIS: LOS ANGELES “Deadline” Season 3 Episode 4 – You know, I’m not usually one to easily handle new members being added to the team. I wasn’t all that comfortable with Nell, but she eventually grew on me and now I love her. And as you’ve seen in my more recent reviews, I wasn’t all that happy with Hunter either.

But this week a new member was added to the team and I didn’t mind them at all. Sure, he may be a little smelly, he’s got very picky tastes when it comes to radio stations, and he has some psychological problems to overcome, but I think Monty is going to be a great addition to the team.

Okay I kid, the real story in this week’s episode was of course Callen finding out a whole lot about his past, and along with that a lot about Hetty’s past as well. I had guessed that Hetty was maybe in charge of protecting Callen’s family but I don’t think I ever guessed that Callen’s mother was working for the CIA. Turns out he comes from a long line of operatives, including his grandfather – which is where the feud with the Comescus started.

I know some of you also guessed that it was Hetty who was writing in that book all those years, the one that kept track of Callen his entire life. Turns out we were right about that as well, but now that we know that Hetty has known about his past all along, how can he (and we) not wonder why she didn’t tell him sooner? She asked for forgiveness and I found it very intriguing that he didn’t reply. I can’t say I blame him, I’m not sure I could forgive something like that either, at least not right away.

There are still pieces of the puzzle that have yet to be found. Things like how his family got out of Romania and who his father is. There is also of course the mystery of his first name but I know for a fact we won’t get that piece of info until the final episode of the series, so I’m okay with waiting to find out that one.

My favorite bits..

Okay whoa. NCIS and NCISLA both starting their eps with a female reporter on camera? *insert Twilight Zone music here*

Aha! I knew they were connected somehow. Hetty was Callen’s mother’s handler for the CIA? That is beyond awesome.

Loving the way they interspersed Callen beating the punching bag with Hetty telling him about his past.

The way Callen’s face went hard when Hetty asked him to forgive her. Yeah, I don’t know if I could either.

Sam having a conversation with a dog. Yep, that’s normal.

Kensi’s “Eew!” when Deeks talked about why the dog had to come to the office.

My ears hurting when Eric blew the dog whistle. Wait. That’s not supposed to happen, right?

“Kensi, Deeks..”
“…and Monty.”

The way Kensi looked over at Deeks when the camera guy talked about his partner. Hm, interesting.

The look on Deeks’ face when Eric said he’d read Kensi’s diary. LOL.

Sam and Callen saying that “sushi” was what happened when things didn’t work out with a pet fish. Har.

You know, I think Deeks is right. I’m pretty sure dogs are indeed a requirement for young, hip couples in Los Angeles.

“Their motto is dog is my co-pilot.”

Busting up so hard when Monty leaned over to give Kensi kisses while Deeks protested. I wonder if it was scripted? It certainly looked like a spontaneous moment.

Deeks going from heavy metal bands to a root vegetable to describe the letters on the license plate. Duh, I so would have said Poison. Really Deeks?

Cracking up at the amount of times Deeks has said “Really?” in this ep so far and it’s not even half over yet.

Monty apparently being more picky about his radio station selection than most people I know.

“Monty, protect the car! Good boy.”

Ha, yeah right Kensi. Sure, a journal is TOTALLY different from a diary.

“And the address they gave doesn’t check out?”
“Not unless they’re renting rooms at the Chuck E. Cheese on Jefferson.” – Hey, I heard that place has great rates.

Sam breaking a car window with his elbow? Youch!

Deeks asking if a journal would have more “adult” content. Ha! Yeah I bet it does.

Deeks asking Monty if he wanted to drive and remarking that he would do it better than Kensi. Ha!

“If you start appearing in my dreams, I’m going to be really freaked out.”

Eric’s surprise when he found out that he had already appeared in Nell’s dream..old, fat and in one of her dresses.

Less than 2 hours to stop a massacre that could change the course of the war? Yep, just your typical day for the team.

Hetty giving Monty his own honorary NCIS badge. Yay Monty!

Monty’s little tail wagging when Sam was talking to him and offering him food.

Hetty calling Callen a “challenging child”. LOL, of that I have no doubt.

Callen staring at the picture of his mother. Aw jeez, why don’t you guys just go ahead and rip my heart out while you’re at it?

What did you think of this episode of NCIS: Los Angeles? Got any favorite bits or least favorite bits of your own? I’d love to hear from you!
