ARMY WIVES The Complete Fifth Season DVD Review

army wives season 5 dvd
Lifetime has released The Complete Fifth Season of its hit TV show Army Wives on DVD. The three disc set contains all 13 episodes and some limited bonus features.

Army Wives stars Kim Delaney as Claudia Joy Holden who is married to Major General Michael James Holden (Brian McNamara). Also at their base are Denise Sherwood (Catherine Bell), Roxie LeBlanc (Sally Pressman), Officer Pamela Moran (Brigid Brannagh) Col Joan Burton (Wendy Davis), and their respective husbands. Army Wives follows the wives of those in the service and how they deal with the stress, family life, and unique situations that army life provides. The fifth season brought us one of the most dramatic and traumatic moments as a death in the line of duty hits really close to home and one of the characters loses a loved one. The death is shown in the fourth episode and the remainder of the season is mostly recovering from it. Season 5 also involved new business ventures, children leaving for college, and some life-changing decisions by a few of the characters including one that may expand a family.

The bonus features on this DVD were very limited. In fact, I would categorize them into three – deleted scenes, a gag reel, and a roundtable.

Deleted scenes – there were 18 total deleted scenes contained on the DVD. They were spread out over every disc. A significant number of them had to do with the various characters greiving or coming to grips with what occurred. The deleted scenes, especially the extended ones, made the story fresh to me and I appreciated every one of them.

Gag Reel – The gag reel was called “Fun on the Set: Bloopers, Babies, Ballroom and Brian McNamara”. The baby definitely stole the show. Every blooper with her in it just had me giggling. It is about five minutes long.

Hangin’ At The Hump With the Cast of Army Wives – the cast shares a roundtable discussion while dining at The Hump. The roundtable includes Kim Delaney, Brian McNamara, Catherine Bell, Sally Pressman, Brigid Brannah, Sterling K. Brown, Wendy Davis, Drew Fuller, Terry Serpico, and Richard Bryant. The cast discusses everything from first impressions, memories from the show, favorite scenes, scense they didn’t like, to favorite guest stars. You can tell that the cast has become a family and it the feature almost feels like you are also a guest at their table.

This is not a DVD to buy for the bonus features. The deleted scenes give you more story and the Hangin’ at The Hump gives you more insight from the actors, but that is about it. However, I think the fifth season of Army Wives is one of the betters ones (aside from the first which is my favorite) and worth a purchase, especially if you are a die hard fan. If you are on the fence about purchasing this one, I would say do it. It is an important DVD for the Army Wives‘ collection.
