RAISING HOPE “Kidnapped” Review

Raising Hope “Kidnapped”, Season 2 Episode 3 – Raising Hope returned this week with another pretty solid episode, although it still didn’t live up to some of the better episodes from the first season.

“Kidnapped” is another flashback episode that fills us in on an incident that happened to the Chance family in 1992. When Burt and Virginia find a hippie at a gas station, Burt pretends to be kidnapped (Hence the title) by running off with the drifter, while Virginia is comforted by Officer Ross, a diminutive policeman who has always had a thing for her.

This story resolved itself just as I thought it would. Now I’m not saying that I knew exactly how it would resolve itself, but I knew that the basic facets of the Raising Hope episode would be there. The conflict would be introduced, we would find out that the conflict was not what we thought, and then the Chance family would grow even closer together because of it. This show was so great in the first season because it was heartwarming, but not too sappy. This episode crossed the line into sappiness a bit too much for me. I’m not saying it made it completely unenjoyable, it just didn’t have the same bite that most installments do.

Part of that might be due to the increased focus on Maw Maw’s character. I’ve always said that her character is best in moderation, but this episode just had too many sight gags and cheap laughs because of her character. I’m fine with a couple good Maw Maw one liners per episode, but you can definitely have too much of a good thing.

Overall, this episode was good but not great. I’m hoping that we get another great episode that reminds us of what this show accomplished in the first season, but for now, I’m fine with consistently solid installments that always leave a smile on my face.

Random Thoughts:

– Looking at the guy who played Jack on IMDb is like looking at a comprehensive list of every network TV show in the past five years. That guy has seriously been in a lot of stuff.

– Holy crap! The guy who played officer Ross was the little kid in the beginning of Jurassic Park that got freaked out by Sam Neill! The years have not been kind to that guy.

– I’ve decided after much deliberation that I’m not a fan of Sabrina’s haircut. Grow it out again!
