2 BROKE GIRLS “And The Breakup Scene” Review

2 BROKE GIRLS "And The Break-Up Scene" Episode 2 (3)

2 BROKE GIRLS “And The Breakup Scene” Season 1 Episode 2 – Last week I praised the first episode of 2 Broke Girls to the heavens. It proved to be an awesome pilot. This episode, unfortunately, is not a follow up I wish I had see. And that’s pretty worrisome, given that it’s the show’s second episode. Last week’s show the episode was sort of cut in half – the first part was standard sitcom affair (high quality standard sitcom affair, but it was pretty standard nonetheless). The second part reached for a heart most sitcoms deplore to acknowledge. Unfortunately this episode, written solely by Michael Patrick King, was more of the same of the beginning, except with flatter jokes and unbelievable moments of trite convenience.

Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs are brilliant leads, but unfortunately the supporting characters, who were entertaining two dimensional figures last week, just descended further and further into stereotypes this week.

There was not much to latch on to in this hectic episode, where things were running at a hundred miles an hour without any sort of semblance of control or pacing, just joke, joke, joke, many of which fell flat, unable even to perk up with Kat Dennings’ naturally brilliant delivery (relationship ghost, I’m looking at you).

There was a plot involving a name up on a blackboard, which I honestly thought had been resolved at the end of last week’s episode. Max’s boyfriend returned for no discernable reason. Bryce Lee is even more Asian than before, his role reduced to cringe worthy, insulting clichéd exaggerations of behaviour. The dude in the kitchen is still perving, even though I don’t even know his name, and Caroline is still wearing a huge pearl necklace.

Hopefully next week’s episode will get better and hopefully Whitney Cummings will move away from her own sitcom and get a chance to write a few episodes of this show, since her absence on the script last night was sorely missed.
