COMMUNITY “Biology 101” Review

COMMUNITY "Biology 101" Season 3 Premiere (4)

Community “Biology 101”, Season 3 Episode 1 – Man, does it feel good to have Community back!

I wasn’t quite sure how I would feel about Community returning for its third season. I was having a hard time getting excited about the season returning, despite all of the great guest star announcements they made in the off-season. Could they really recapture the hilarity of the first two seasons? Would the “random” humor remain fresh? Well, all of my fears were quickly put to rest by the hilarious opening musical number to start off the season. What a great way to welcome everybody back from the summer.

There have definitely been some changes to the group in the off-season. The group’s supposedly matured, the dean’s grown a goatee, and Chang has moved into the air vents. Not only that, but we’ve already met two of the much hyped about guest stars: John Goodman and Michael Williams. Both of these actors are much better known for their dramatic work, so it’s always great to see dramatic actors juxtaposed with comedic roles. Goodman really killed it, but Williams really wasn’t given that many funny lines. We’ll see how these characters pan out in future episodes. I’d really like to see more from Goodman, and I know he’s signed on to do at least 6 episodes, so hopefully we’ll get more.

The rest of the episode was really all about getting the group back to the status quo. We had Pierce coming into the group and getting Jeff bumped out, then Jeff coming back into the group and wanting Pierce out, and then at the end we get the whole gang sitting around the study table again. I was kind of hoping that Pierce’s storyline of living separate from the group would have continued for a little bit longer, as it seemed like such a major plot point from last season’s finale, but it appears that the writers want to get everybody back together for maximum hilarity. That’s fine with me!

There were a couple really hilarious jokes here, but they were fewer and farther between than most episodes of Community. It was clear that this episode was dedicated to getting the group back together, introducing our new guest stars, and setting the story in motion for the rest of the season. I hope future episodes can bring a little more jokes and a little less drama, and we’ll see Community back in top form again!

Random Thoughts:

– Who sings the theme song for this show? It’s so darn catchy!

– Have any of you guys seen The Wire? I know that Michael Williams is best known for his role on that show, but I’ve never gotten around to seeing it. Is it as life changing as everybody says?

– I think that Universal Television logo is new. It looks pretty dumb. Hopefully that’s not for all their TV shows.
