HBO Orders Boxing Pilot DA BRICK

Doug Ellin

HBO has ordered a new boxing pilot, per Deadline, from Entourage creator Doug Ellin (pictured above), and his creative team of director Spike Lee, former boxing star Mike Tyson and John Ridley. The new series, titled DA BRICK,chronicles the life of a young black New Jersey bred boxer in modern times. The story is reportedly loosely based on the life of Tyson.

Talking to Deadline about how Da Brick came about, Ellin shared that the idea came to life after Tyson made a cameo in Entourage. “That’s when Mike asked me, why don’t we do with my life what we did with Mark’s life. The initial idea was ‘Entourage meets The Wire,’ an edgy story about an up-and-coming boxer and his crew that is much more dramatic than Entourage.”

After looking for the right performer to fill the part, showrunners have signed actor John Boyega (Attack the Block) to play the lead role of the main charcater Donnie. Viewers will get to see the drama play out as Donnie is released from juvenile detention at the age of eighteen years old. From there the series will follow the boxing youngster as he explores what it means to “be a man both for himself, and to those around him.”

A release date for Da Brick has yet to be announced.
