AWKWARD “The Adventures of Aunt Ally and Lil B” Review

AWKWARD (MTV) Episode 8
AWKWARD “The Adventures of Aunt Ally and the Lil’ B” Season 1 Episode 8 – For such a tiny show as Awkward there was a remarkably big reveal in this week’s episode, “The Adventures of Aunt Ally and the Lil’ B.” But first…the obligatory “unpopular girl throws kegger” subplot!

I know what you’re saying. Jenna? Throwing a kegger? Well, it wasn’t her idea, obviously. This stroke of genius came from her mother’s best friend, the self-proclaimed Aunt Ally, who has been calling Jenna “Lil Bitch” since the day she was born. I love how it’s painfully obvious that Ally completely resents Jenna’s existence, probably since it forever changed her friendship with Lacey before college and life ever could. There’s some affection there, but mostly you can tell that Ally just wants to be Jenna’s age again, with no cares and no responsibilities…and Lacey (for all that she tries to act like a teenager) hasn’t really been able to do that since high school.

Still, in a moment of Ally-induced enthusiasm, Lacey eagerly agrees to host a kegger in an effort to make her daughter popular. She’s down with taping up Jenna’s boobs and buying German beer…but when Ally gives Jenna a beta-blocker, Lacey the BFF turns into Lacey the Mother. And thank goodness for it. Too many parents try to be their teenager daughter’s bestie and completely forget to be a parent. It’s nice to see that for all of her antics, Lacey can at least identify the boundaries. It just would have been even nicer if she could have drawn them herself before her daughter was way under the influence.

Yes, a beta-blocker plus Heineken plus two cute guys who like her all leads Jenna down a dangerous path that ends with her in bed with Ally (just sleeping) and no memory of the previous six hours. With her very first hangover, Jenna is forced to put the pieces together and figure out why she has Matty’s hat, why Jake has her father’s shirt and, most importantly, why Tamara isn’t answering her phone.

Jake is easy enough to solve; she loaned him her father’s shirt after she puked on his. Matty takes a little more effort, but eventually she remembers that in the height of her drunkenness, she basically told him off, mocking him for thinking he was so much better than her and that he was embarrassed to be seen with her in public and that the only reason he came was because he liked to party.

Whew! Jenna! I’m kind of proud of you. It might have made him mad, but it was what he needed to hear because she was basically telling the truth. Alcohol and drugs are terrific truth serums. And Matty needed that mirror held up to his face, even if he didn’t like his reflection.

Of course…not all truths should be revealed. While drunk and drugged, Jenna accidentally makes out with Tamara’s crush. And being Tamara (hyper, insecure and moral-less), her so-called best friend doesn’t simply accept her apology and understand that crazy crap happens at keggers (like Lacey does with Ally). No, she commits the ultimate betrayal…or rather she confesses to having already committed the ultimate betrayal.

Tamara sent “the” letter to Jenna.

Wow. I can honestly say, I didn’t see that coming, but it makes perfect sense. Tamara is clearly jealous of Jenna and it drove her to do something horrible. The question now is…why does it seem like Jenna is trying to make up with her in the preview for next week’s ep of Awkward? Seems to me like Jenna should write this friendship off entirely.

What did you think of this week’s episode? Did Matty have it coming? Will Ally ever put on some pants? Let me know below!!
