AWKWARD (MTV) “Jenna Lives” Review

Awkward (MTV) Episode 5 Review

AWKWARD “Jenna Lives” Season 1, Episode 5 – If there was any message to be found in the latest Awkward episode, “Jenna Lives,” it’s that jumping to conclusions isn’t always a bad thing. Yes, sometimes you’ll be wrong in your assumptions, but what if you’re right? You might just find yourself with a creepy little stalker of your very own.

After Matty decided he wasn’t ready for a relationship with Jenna (you know, after he took her virginity and slept with her a bunch of times), he has the balls to show up to school with his arm wrapped around a hot chick named Olivia. Like any teenage girl, Jenna is appropriately obsessed with finding out exactly what’s up with that. Does Matty just not want to be with her and if so, why not?

Could it have something to do with her so-called suicide attempt? It sure seems that way to Jenna, especially when she starts seeing a guy around school wearing a T-shirt that says “Jenna Lives” on the front and “In Tribute” on the back. Sure, he claims that it’s an advertisement for his tribute band, but Jenna is convinced that not only is the shirt all about her, but that the continued attention given to her suicide scandal is why Matty seems to want Olivia instead.

It would have been so easy for the show to make Olivia into a bitch, but they take the high ground and Jenna finds out during detention (which she got for ripping the T-shirt off her stalker’s back) that she’s a decent human being. Even though all signs point to her being Matty’s girlfriend, Jenna kind of digs her.

Of course, she’s not; Olivia is actually dating Matty’s brother, but Jenna doesn’t find this out until after she pours her heart out to Jake in hypotheticals. He thinks she’s talking about him instead of Matty and after assuring her that any guy who didn’t have a girlfriend would be lucky to have her, Jake surprises Jenna with a kiss. Didn’t see that coming, at least not this early into the show, but I always appreciate a good surprise.

So Jenna’s first impression of Olivia wasn’t right, but her instincts were dead-on about Stalker Boy. After she apologizes to him for the attack and the assumption that his shirts were about her, we get to see inside his locker…and it’s all Jenna, all the time. Oh boy. This probably won’t end well.

Thank you, Awkward, for reminding me how much it sucks to be a hormonal teenager. Something happens when you hit thirty and you start thinking that high school was a lot better than it was. If this happens to you, I recommend at least a half hour of MTV per week. That’ll slap the nostalgia right out of you.

What did you think of the episode? Did you not realize how pale Jenna is until she was sitting next to Olivia? How much longer will the idiot guidance counselor be funny? Let me know below!
