Will Chris Meloni’s Ears Be Burning as LAW & ORDER: SVU Closes His Story? August 16, 2011 Law and Order: SVU, News Whether due to greed, stubbornness, or sheer craziness, it is a sad fact that Chris Meloni will not be returning to NBC’s LAW & ORDER: SVU. But we can be thankful that his character, Detective Elliot Stabler, won’t depart without an explanation. While unwilling to delve into details, showrunner Warren Leight states to TVLine.com that there will not be an implied off-screen death but that there will be consequences to his disappearance. The “first several episodes will explore the absence and the effect it has on the squadroom and Olivia (Mariska Hargitay).” And the events of last May’s finale – Stabler shooting and killing a young girl – also will inevitably be worked into the beginning of season 13. The new season of Law & Order: SVU will premiere on September 21 at 10/9c. Does this news make you more willing to give a season without Meloni a try?
