WILFRED “Conscience” Review

WILFRED (FX) Conscience Episode 6

WILFRED “Conscience” Season 1 Episode 6 – WILFRED is a strange show. While I really enjoy it, I often find myself watching it and asking things like: “Why? Why am I watching a show with a grown man dressed as a dog talking to Frodo
from Lord of the Rings?”… That’s what happened this week.

While “Conscience” wasn’t a horrible (or even a remotely bad) episode, it just didn’t tickle my fancy the way the previous weeks have.

Ryan is stuck when Jenna’s boyfriend Drew (Chris Klein) comes back into town. Not only does he have to see the two of them together constantly, he has Wilfred in his ear, conspiring about plans to “destroy” Drew. At first Ryan resists (Wilfred’s plan to hit Drew over the head with a rock was a bit much), but after sometime decides that challenging Drew to a competitive game of ping pong may be the best way for Jenna to see his true colors.

Drew has a huge competitive streak, and promised Jenna that he wouldn’t compete in sports anymore – after he threw a Wii remote out the window. When he lost to her father playing Wii Bowling. Well, Drew takes Ryan up on the offer, and Ryan’s (and Wilfred’s!) plan is set into motion.

With Jenna watching, Drew and Ryan duke it out, and the end results in Drew being a total idiot to Ryan. Jenna is upset and storms away, while Wilfred celebrates and Ryan feels guilty. Using typical Wilfred tactics of humiliation and manipulation, he tries to make Ryan see that it was all for the best.

Sick of being treated with no respect, Ryan whacks Wilfred on the nose with a rolled up newspaper. This was my favorite part of the episode. The look on Wilfred’s face was priceless and he goes slinking back home. Of course he enlists some well placed revenge, but everything works out in the end.

Except that Drew and Jenna are now broken up and Drew is on his way back to Wisconsin. Ryan still feels guilty, but decides that there really isn’t anything that he can do about it.

Again, while “Conscience” wasn’t a HORRIBLE episode of the FX comedy, it just lacked something for me. but maybe it was just me. It DID open the door for Jenna and Ryan, but is that really the point of Wilfred? Does it matter who she’s dating? Wilfred doesn’t seem to like anyone, which in itself makes for a funny episode. so I say keep bringing on the random guys.

What did you think about this week’s episode of Wilfred?.
