NTSF:SD:SUV “The Birthday Party That Was Neither” Review

NTSF:SD:SUV “The Birthday Party That Was Neither” Season 1, Episode 2 – This week on NTSF:SD:SUV, Trent, Piper, Alphonse and Sam all received a phone call from an unknown caller who bribed them into bringing a million dollars each to an abandoned sugar mill. The caller made the fatal mistake of leaving out Kove from his bribery calls, which caused her to believe that she was the only one on the team not invited to a birthday party.

Kove was married to Trent – twice – although she doesn’t appear to be the mother of his children. I would think that if she was their mother, Trent would have told her that their children were being ransomed. I’m wondering how many ex-wives Trent will have over the course of the series since it looks like another ex-wife will be popping up in the next episode. I loved the bit about all the other staff telling Kove, “you’re not my wife” as they scrambled out of the building.

Chip was a former NTSF:SD:SUV team member until the group was attacked by ninjas at the sugar mill where he had both thumbs chopped off in the line of duty. The group left him for dead and after getting a set of prosthetic thumbs, he was on a fast track to vengeance. Chip was a hilarious villain for the episode, explaining how he had “wandered the Earth from town to town, like a thumb-less Incredible Hulk without any powers.” Chip seemed creepy and brilliant compared to his former team members so I loved how quickly his demeanor changed the minute the team was willing to invite him back onto the NTSF:SD:SUV staff.

After Kove had consulted with their Precog and the Sentient Automated Machine, aka S.A.M., she discovered all the details of Chip’s rendezvous with the team and hustled down to the sugar mill to teach them all a lesson herself. Well, mostly just Chip learned the lesson, but I’m sure the sight of Chip being hacked at with a sword was enough to teach them all to never leave Kove out of their plans.

Kove is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in the NTSF:SD:SUV world and I’m excited to see more of her dark humor in the series. I enjoyed this episode more than I had enjoyed the pilot and it looks like next week’s episode will be even more ridiculous than this one was, so I’m definitely looking forward to it.
