SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE “Top 12 Perform” Review

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE “Top 12 Perform” Season 8 Episode 14 – And we’re back with only 12 dancers left on So You Think You Can Dance. This week’s guest judges included Modern Family‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson (who was a great judge!) and Sonya Tayeh. Let’s talk about the performances. Tonight each couple will dance twice.

Sasha & Alexander
Style: Paso Doble
Choreographer: Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin
Song: “Alley Dash/March of the Trolls” by Taylor Long/Rick Powell
Thoughts: I kind of liked this a lot! Wow, that was so cool. Both Sasha and Alexander were so strong and it looked beautiful. I don’t want to speak too soon, but this might be at the top of my list tonight.

Jordan & Tadd
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Travis Wall
Song: “Brotsjor” by Olafur Arnalds
Thoughts: Great costume for Jordan. Once again a beautiful routine by Travis Wall.

Ryan & Ricky
Style: Broadway
Choreographer: Spencer Liff
Song: “All I Need Is The Girl” by Frank Sinatra
Thoughts: I’m starting to think that I don’t love Broadway routines on SYTYCD because this was just ok for me. I actually agreed with Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s critic, I think he nailed it on the head.

Caitlynn & Mitchell
Style: Hip Hop
Choreographer:
Song: “Break the Chain” by Lupe Fiasco featuring Eric Turner & Sway
Thoughts: Another ok routine for me. It just didn’t work and couldn’t connect to it.

Melanie & Marko
Style: Tango
Choreographer: Louie Van Amstel
Song: “Triptico” by Gotan Project
Thoughts: Woa! That last move was insane! And the whole performance was great. Marko and Melanie are really strong dancers, I was glued to my screen watching this tango.

Clarice & Jess
Style: Lyrical Hop Hop
Choreographer: Christopher Scott
Song: “Just the Way You Are” by Boyce Avenue
Thoughts: Aww, I really liked this routine.

Sasha & Alexander
Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Tyce DiOrio
Song: “That’s Life” by Aretha Franklin
Thoughts: I enjoyed it. A great routine by Tyce DiOrio.

Jordan & Tadd
Style: Broadway
Choreographer: Specer Liff
Song: “Out Tonight” from Rent (Original Broadway Cast)
Thoughts: Another so-so Broadway routine. Nothing exciting about it.

Ryan & Ricky
Style: Cha Cha
Choreographer: Louie Van Amstel
Song: “Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)” by Enrique Iglesias featuring DJ Frank E
Thoughts: It wasn’t as hot and sharp as I would have wanted it to be, but it was still pretty good. There were some impressive moves there.

Caitlynn & Mitchell
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Travis Wall
Song: “Piece of My Heart” by Janis Joplin
Thoughts: I know that judges really liked this one, and while I enjoyed it, I didn’t love it as much as they did. It was good, not great.

Melanie & Marko
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Dee Caspary
Song: “Skins & Bones” by David J. Roch
Thoughts: My favorite of the night! Wow, just wow. Between the music, the performance, the emotion, it just clicked! I love that Jesse Tyler Ferguson named this the “moth dance,” it’s so perfect!

Clarice & Jess
Style: Jive
Choreographer: Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin
Song: “Ain’t Nothing Wrong With That” by Robert Randolph & The Family Band
Thoughts: There were some inconstancies. Some parts were really good and others were just ok. Although I do think Jess outdanced Clarice, he was fantastic.

So that’s it for tonight. My favorites of the night were: Melanie & Marko’s 2nd performance and Sasha & Alexander’s 1st performance.

Bottom three: Man this is hard! I guess it would have to be Ryan & Ricky, Jordan & Tadd and Caitlynn & Mitchell for me.

Remember this was the last night that the couples danced together. Tomorrow the All-Stars will also be announced as well as pairings, so don’t miss it.

But in the meantime, I’d love to hear your thoughts on tonight’s performances. Who were your favorites and who would you put in the bottom three?
