FALLING SKIES “Silent Kill” Advance Review

FALLING SKIES “Silent Kill” Season 1, Episode 5 – Once again, I was able to get my hands on an advance screening of this week’s episode of Falling Skies. As it turns out, “Silent Kill” is probably my favorite episode thus far. There are so many specific details that I would love to chat about, but since the episode doesn’t air until later tonight, I’ll keep my lips sealed.

Last week, I was concerned that Falling Skies would be falling into a repetitive narrative, but this week broke all of the patterns that I had expected the show to follow. Although there was still an important mission in this episode, more time was spent cultivating our main characters in ways we haven’t seen before. They became more than experienced survivors, captivating us with their tragic back stories and became characters existing in the present, evolving in real time with every new development. While some scenes are heartbreaking to watch, this episode renewed my interest in many of the characters and tested some of my preconceived notions about the type of people they were.

That evolution is not limited to the humans in this episode of Falling Skies either. While information about the Skitters is still very limited, there are some moments that bring up questions about the nature of the Skitters. I was completely wrapped up in the suspense during a few intense scenes and I found myself holding my breath as I stared at the screen, completely shocked by the events that were unfolding.

Although I’m sure the 2nd Mass may eventually have to leave the safety of the school, allowing this group to be stationary the last few episodes has worked really well. As the enormity of the invasion eventually comes back into the focus, new characters and new obstacles will pop up, but at this point, the narrower scope of the narrative has given us some time to stop and watch these characters become three dimensional. I completely enjoyed Falling Skies this week and I can not wait to see what happens next.
