NECESSARY ROUGHNESS “Pilot” Advance Review

Necessary Roughness (USA) Pilot

NECESSARY ROUGHNESS “Pilot” Episode 1 – Dani is a woman whose life is perfect. Perfect house. Perfect husband. Perfect kids. Perfect job. It really couldn’t get more perfect. That is, until it all goes to hell and a handbasket. She figures out her husband is cheating on her and after that, it seems like everything else in her life goes in the crapper as well. That perfect house isn’t as perfect when you have to pay the mortgage without your husband’s big paycheck and are also trying to pay for a divorce. And those perfect kids? Well they’re not quite as angelic as mommy liked to think they were.

So Dani finds herself suddenly plunged into a whole new life. She gets a new job, possibly a new guy (that part is a bit complicated) and starts working on getting things as close to normal as she can.

The characters in this show really won me over. From Dani’s mom to the kids, to the newest man in her life, Matt, and the mysterious Nico, even Dani’s wacky best friend. All of them had their little quirks and all of them were indispensable to the story. Every single one of them also had a moment where I decided that I cared about them, which I didn’t expect.

Overall I enjoyed the pilot episode and though I’m not scheduled as the regular reviewer for Necessary Roughness this season, I think I’m going to keep on watching it. Now that I’ve met this cast of characters, I gotta know what happens next.

Also, I was lucky enough to get to visit Atlanta a few weeks ago to tour the set and meet the wonderful cast and crew. Check out my article and photos from the set here, and stay tuned for interviews from the cast to come.

My favorite (non-spoilery) bits…

“I don’t do crusts.”

I’m not one of those people who hates clowns, but if one did to me what it did to Dani, I think I’d change my mind about that.

“Ma! He cheated on me. More than once!”
“But less than Tiger Woods.”

Dani catching a football probably about as well as I would. Not sure if I would have squealed when I did it, but it was hilarious.

Dani having to clarify for a patient that she was not, in fact, a hooker.

Dani’s daughter putting on the best act ever.

Actually being a little scared for Dani for a minute there.

Dani not being afraid to stand up for herself, even in a room full of big guys.

Dani getting a surprise plate of banana pancakes from a very unusual source.

Dani being told to go to her room by her mother.

“You bet my sweet sixteen money on the horses, ma.”
“And won! That’s how we got the microwave.”

Necessary Roughness premieres tonight (Wednesday, June 29) on USA Network at 10/9c. Once the episode has aired, come back up and let me know what you think. I’d love to hear from you!
