THE BIG C Season 2 Advance Review – Cathy Fights Back

THE BIG C "Losing Patients" Season 2 Episode 1 (6)

Season 2 of Showtime’s wonderful series, THE BIG C, returns tonight, Monday June 27, at 10:30pm (you can check out some photos from the episode here) and I could not be happier.

I was lucky enough to get an early peek at the first four episodes from Season 2 and of course watched them back to back because there is no way to stop once you’ve started, that’s how addictive this The Big C is.

For those of you who don’t know, The Big C follows wife and mother, Cathy Jamison (Laura Linney), who finds out she has cancer. In the first season, Cathy spent a lot of the episodes preparing for what would happen should she die (i.e. buying presents for her son for every year that she would be gone until his 18th birthday) and not telling anyone about her being sick.

In season 2, the rules have changed a bit because her husband Paul (Oliver Platt) and son Adam (Gabriel Basso), now know the truth. Although Cathy’s brother Sean (John Benjamin Hickey) doesn’t know yet, it won’t be long until he does. I’ll let you find out exactly how he reacts, it’s pretty great.

But the rules being changed doesn’t mean that the show has lost its edge. Oh no, The Big C is back and stronger than before. Cathy is one “Brave Bitch” and the beginning of the season deals with her trying to find some new treatment for her cancer.

That’s how we’re introduced to some new great characters and fantastic guest stars including the previously announced Alan Alda, who plays Dr. Atticus Sherman, an oncologist Cathy consults after her previous treatment does not yield the desired results.

But that’s not all, in episode 4, we meet guest star Hugh Dancy‘s character Lee, a cancer patient who finds himself in the same trial as Cathy. Let me tell you, I’ve only seen him in one episode, but he’s already my new favorite character. Not only is Hugh Dancy giving a brilliant performance, but his character is the perfect addition to the show. He made me laugh so much in only one episode, I cannot wait to see more of him. (You can see a few photos of Hugh Dancy in the fourth episode of The Big C here).

In addition, Parker Posey is also going to be guest starring this season, but since I haven’t seen her yet, I can’t really say much about her, all I know is that she’ll develop some sort of relationship with Cathy’s son, Adam.

But in addition to all these guest stars, some of our other favorite characters are returning including Andrea (Gabourey Sidibe), Cathy’s student/friend, who will get more involved in Cathy’s life this season. Cynthia Nixon is also back this season as Cathy’s friend Rebecca, who is now pregnant with Sean’s baby. These two make quite the interesting pair.

I want to end by saying that I also love that this season we get see more of Paul taking care of Cathy. So if you weren’t sure if you really liked him last season, I think he more than redeems himself this season.

Overall, I really exciting beginning to what promises to be another great season. If you loved the show last season, you’ll definitely fall in love with it all over again.

Don’t forget to tune in tonight, June 27, at 10:30pm on Showtime.
