SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE (2011) “Las Vegas Callbacks” Review

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE “Las Vegas Callbacks” Season 8 Episode 4 – Now that the auditions are done, it was time to head to Vegas in this new season of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.

I usually try not to get attached to too many dancers because there are still lots of brutal cuts to come, but I do find Vegas quite entertaining. I think the best part of it is that we not only get a two-hour episode, but we get to see everything from the solo, group, contemporary to dancing for your life all at once.

So let’s talk about some of the noteworthy moments of tonight’s Vegas callbacks.

1) Solo

I just loved Yvetta’s solo on Chicago’s “When You’re Good to Mama.” So sexy and so entertaining, definitely a highlight of the night for me. No other solo caught my attention the way she did, that’s for sure.

2) Hip-Hop Routine

Nappytabs (Napoleon and Tabitha for those who don’t know) were back to share their routine with the contestants.

That was quite a brutal routine with lots of people being sent home, and from what we saw rightfully so. Turns out hip hop’s not all that easy to do in case you hadn’t realized.

I don’t think anyone really stood out to me in that round.

3) Broadway

Ah Broadway! Seems so easy, but can be so treacherous. Tyce DiOrio took the stage for that one to share his routine.

Once again nothing too noteworthy for in that round, but there were a few entertaining performances.

4) Jive

It was then time to step into the Jive round choreographed by Jason Gilkison.

For this round, I have to mention Natalia who was given a stronger partner in order to show the judges what she could really do. I was totally rooting for her. That girl has heart and is so entertaining to watch.

5) Group Performance

I was surprised that we didn’t get more drama from that round, but I can’t say that I really missed it. Sometimes it’s just too much. That said, I did wish that we had seen more of the group performances because it looked like there were some really good ones.

And once again I have to mention Natalia who pulled it through after some health issues.

6) Contemporary

Finally, we get to the kiss of death: Contemporary.

Travis Wall was the one choreographing the routine. I liked his philosophy that his routine was something that he would give the dancers on the show, so that this would reveal who were the strongest contestants.

Still there were some heartbreaks. But like I said at the beginning I’m not too attached to anyone, so I wasn’t sad to see anyone go. However, I’m sure some people were surprised that Season 5 winner Jeanine’s sister didn’t make it.

I’ll admit that Ryan Ramirez is one of the contestants I am rooting for. There’s just something about her that I like and I hope that she makes top 20 this time.

Finally, it was time for one last solo and once again poor Natalia, after taking a trip to the hospital and missing the whole contemporary round, was able to move on and get a chance to maybe make it to the top 20.

And so it all comes down to this. Tomorrow we finally find out who this year’s Top 20 of So You Think You Can Dance will be.

In the meantime, it’s your turn to share your thoughts on the Vegas callbacks. Do you have any favorites so far? Did some of your favorites get sent home? Who are you hoping makes top 20?
