EXTREME MAKEOVER: WEIGHT LOSS EDITION “Pilot” Review

Extreme Makeover Weight Loss

EXTREME MAKEOVER: WEIGHT LOSS EDITION Season 1 Episode 1 “Pilot” – This is my first time reviewing a reality TV show as I don’t often watch too many of them. Usually I’m not a huge fan of anything involving competition (well, except maybe for Project Runway – that’s my guilty pleasure) and that’s what first interested me in this version of Extreme Makeover. These people, much like in the original “Home Edition”, basically win a huge prize and they don’t have to compete for it.

They do, however, have to work really hard for it. Losing weight is no joke, especially the amount that these people we’re going to see this season have to lose. This week’s winner of a life of living hell..um I mean a complete health makeover was Rachel, a PE teacher who also happened to weigh over 300 lbs.

Also like the original, this Extreme Makeover edition also starts with a surprise. Life trainer Chris shows up at the chosen person’s door and tells them that they are going to be on the show and that their lives are about to change forever. Rachel’s reaction was much like you’d expect and after she gets the good news, she is whisked off to weigh in and start the program.

I was surprised to see that the contestants will apparently be doing the program at their own homes. I don’t know why but I assumed that they would be hidden away from family and friends, sacrificing their entire lives for a year and revealing themselves in their brand new body at the end. Turns out it’s not nearly that dramatic. Chris does outfit Rachel’s family home with her own personal gym, works out with her every morning, and gives her the education to eat right, but other than that she’s on her own.

What we see then is the slow transformation as she loses her first 80 lbs in three months, getting a gift for her effort in the form of a trip to Greece. Her next goal doesn’t come as easily and I was just as shocked as Chris when, at her six month weigh in, Rachel had only lost another 3 lbs. Wow.

There’s lots of crying, again just as you’d expect from a show called Extreme Makeover, but Rachel does get through it and even gets approved for the skin removal surgery she so badly wants. After that things move fast and suddenly it’s the end of the show. For me, the big reveal wasn’t nearly as fun to watch as on the Home Edition of this show, but then again, it’s not like you can take a tour around a person’s body.

Overall I found Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition okay and maybe even a little inspiring. The middle dragged a little, as did the very end, but other than that, I did find myself interested in Rachel’s journey. I’m curious to see what happens with the next winner.
