VIKINGS Series Raids MGM

MGM - Vikings

MGM is developing a drama series tentatively titled VIKINGS, reports Deadline.com. The studio has teamed with Michael Hirst and Morgan O’Sullivan (The Tudors, Camelot) on the project. Hirst will work on the framework for the project and probably write most or all of the episodes. He will also serve as executive producer with O’Sullivan and producers/managers Sherry Marsh and Alan Gasmer.

Coincidentally, years ago Hirst, who is a Viking history buff, created an unproduced feature script about the famous Scandinavian warriors. As Deadline.com details, “the series will chronicle the Vikings’ exploits as warriors, explorers, builders, merchants, pirates and mercenaries through what is known as the Viking Age of Scandinavian, British and Irish history from the late-8th to the mid-11th century. It will center on Ragnar Lodbrok, one of the most popular Viking heroes, a great commander who briefly ruled Denmark and Sweden and was linked to two shieldmaidens and a queen.”

Production on a 10-episode first season is slated to begin next year in Ireland. The Viking project will be an Ireland-Canada co-production. MGM will finance all costs outside of Canada and Ireland, and will be responsible for domestic and international distribution of the series.
