The Divine Miss M Gets Lawyerly: Bette Midler to Star in HBO’s Phil Spector Biopic

HBO’s Phil Spector movie is starting to taking shape. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Bette Midler is the latest cast addition to the film which stars Al Pacino as Spector.

Midler will play Spector’s defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden, who represented the music producer during his first murder trial. She joins a defense team which also boasts Arrested Development‘s Jeffrey Tambor as attorney Bruce Cutler.

The untitled biopic, which is being executive-produced by Barry Levinson, will revolve around the complicated relationship between Spector and Baden. David Mamet
(Wag the Dog, Heist) will write and direct.

Midler’s last foray into television was her failed CBS sitcom Bette in 200-1. She had previously earned an Emmy nomination for her 1993 TV movie Gypsy.

Levinson executive produced and directed HBO’s You Don’t Know Jack, for which earned both he and Pacino Emmys.

I don’t have a lot of interest in Phil Spector, but I’ll watch just to see Al Pacino and Bette Midler play off each other. Will anyone else tune in?
