THE BIG BANG THEORY “The Roommate Transmogrification” Review

The Big Bang Theory

THE BIG BANG THEORY “The Roommate Transmogrification” Season 4 Episode 24 – When Leonard and Priya’s bedroom antics become too much to bear, Raj moves in with Sheldon temporarily. Things go smoothly, Sheldon is impressed, and all seems well – until Raj and Penny get drunk and wake up in bed together.

Meanwhile, Priya attempts to continue keeping her relationship with Leonard from her parents, but it all goes belly up when he overhears a mention of her moving back to India and confronts her – in the middle of a video call. An upset Priya walks out and Leonard awkwardly ends the call with her parents and goes home to sleep on the couch.

Bernadette is informed that she will get her PhD in microbiology and the gang take it upon themselves to point out that Howard is the only non-doctor amongst his scientist friends. It’s an annoyance at first, but when Bernadette gets a highly paying job and buys Howard an expensive gift, something he could never afford himself, he feels insecure. They argue and he makes his way to see Sheldon and Leonard – just in time to witness Penny and Raj’s morning after walk of shame.

I found this season finale, like much of season 4, mediocre. That’s not to say that season 4 didn’t have some good episodes – there were a bunch of great episodes here and there – but, in my opinion, it wasn’t as strong as the seasons preceding.

The episode itself just sort of addled along. It set up a host of issues for the gang to deal with in season five, but it also felt like set up, not like an episode in its own right. The Priya/Leonard thread just stopped cold (seriously, she just walked out of the room) and could have been given a stronger ending. We didn’t get to see the argument between Howard and Bernadette, so him turning up at the end of the episode felt pretty ‘um, okay then’ to me. And Penny and Raj were so telegraphed that I just couldn’t find it as funny as I wanted to (and I really wanted to).

But on a positive note, it does set up good scenarios for next season. Will Priya stay with Leonard or go back to India? Will Raj be ostracised from the group for sleeping with Penny? Will Penny be ostracised from the group for sleeping with Raj? Will her and Leonard get back together? Will Howard and Bernadette make it to the aisle?

Now excuse me, I have to try massaging myself like Sheldon. That must be one amazing pressure point to rub!

Howard’s Mom-watch We learn two things this week: firstly, Mama Wolowitz is still eager to spend time with her future daughter-in-law and secondly, she wants to play doctor with Raj. Ick!

Quote/s of the episode:

Mama Wolowitz: “Paging Doctor Cutiepie!”

Leonard: “What are you doing here?”
Raj: “I was sleeping!”
Leonard: “In my bed?”
Raj: “Well I would have slept in my own bed but it’s being used to bring shame to my family. And the memory of Gene Roddenberry.”

Penny: “Whaddya mean new roommate, what happened to Leonard?”
Sheldon: “Same thing that happened to Homo erectus, he was replaced by a superior species.”
Raj: “I’m the new Homo in town.”

Howard: “So do you know what kinda research you’ll be doing at this pharmaceutical company?”
Bernadette: “Well, there were a couple of opportunities available but I volunteered for the premature ejaculation project. I mean it’s not like either one of us has heart disease.”

Sheldon: “Man is not the only species that ferments fruit in order to become intoxicated. Can you guess what the other is? Hint: sometimes they pack the alcohol in their trunks.”
Penny: “Monkeys.”
Sheldon: “When does a monkey have a trunk?”
Penny: “When a suitcase just won’t do.”

Penny: “Really? Still can’t talk to me?”
