THE MIDDLE “The Bridge” Review

THE MIDDLE “The Bridge” Season 2 Episode 23 – Frankie and Mike discover the power of quitting as a parenting tool (watch for Frankie’s book) while Axl learns there’s a fine line between winning and losing as THE MIDDLE gets real in its “The Bridge” episode.

Whoa. Sue is now a full-on Teen Angst Monster and I suddenly have the urge to call my mom and beg forgiveness for the horrific teen years because this is a little too close to real life. “You just don’t get it!” “I said yes.” “Oh, okay. Could you give me some privacy then?” Hee. Love Mike tiptoeing away when her voice hits that scary pitch, but Frankie’s swimsuit monologue rules all. “Women all over the world get this. I don’t even put on a swimsuit without two margaritas in me.” Sing it, sister. That is one epic rant and while it sounds hyperbolic, swimsuit shopping really is a soul crushing rite of passage that every woman must go through. Repeatedly. Love that Frankie is drinking a margarita later when Mike comes home, too. Little details like that set episodes apart.

“When Bridges Collapse.” Hee to Brick gnawing on his book in terror as he watches in the well-played flashback. His fear of bridges (gephyrophobia) is about as impressively detailed as I’ve ever heard–*eyeballs*–and I have to tell you, I probably would have folded a lot faster than Frankie. Love her different approaches (“All the cool kids can do it. Don’t you want to be cool?”; “What are you, a baby? A widdle iddle baby?”) and Mike’s subsequent and equally impressive failure. Brick truly is stubborn and of course he randomly decides to wander across the bridge months later. Such a wonderful and unique character.

Axl has quite the plan for going from community pool lifeguard to rapper in four easy steps. “If you want a shout out at the Grammys, you better keep it down.” Deluded teenagers are fun. He finally and shockingly beats, in a nice bit of continuity, Sean Donahue. “I might have bit him.” Snort. Of course, Sean wins in the end with a senate page job and two girls to take to the lake while Axl fishes poo out of the pool, but at least Axl can now make jeans into a flotation device.

There a plenty of chuckles and a few big laughs in this episode of The Middle, and it’s an interesting glimpse into what lies ahead as Axl, Sue, and Brick grow up. Mike and Frankie are definitely in trouble, which is good news for viewers.

Favorite lines:

“I know our time isn’t worth anything, but still.”

“If I could go back in time and unsee the Justin Bieber movie for this, I would. That’s how important this is.”

“Maybe I’ll build a bridge in front of your room and you’ll never feel safe again.”

“Don’t judge. I’m you in ten minutes.”

“Well, you set the bar pretty high with complete failure.”

“What flavor did you get?” “I don’t remember. It tastes like failure.”

“There are more relaxed people in electric chairs.”

What did you think of “The Bridge?” What great moments did I miss? Who would be the hardest to raise–Axl, Sue, or Brick? Let me know in the comments.
