Robert De Niro Going Back to Crime for an HBO Bernie Madoff Movie

A Bernie Madoff movie seems right up HBO’s alley and sure enough, the premium cable network has one in development. Per Deadline, HBO has optioned the rights to NY Times senior financial writer Diane Henriques’ recent book THE WIZARD OF LIES: BERNIE MADOFF AND THE DEATH OF TRUST and is in talks with legendary actor Robert De Niro to play the notorious swindler.

Playing a criminal would certainly be nothing new for De Niro and it could be a deliciously meaty role for him. In an odd twist, while De Niro wasn’t one of Madoff’s victims, he did fall prey to a different swindler, gallery owner Lawrence Salander. In 2009, Salander was charged with cheating clients, including De Niro, out of over $88 million on art deals over a fifteen year period.

Released in April, The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust is regarded as the definitive study of Madoff’s massive Ponzi scheme, explaining exactly how the giant con was pulled off for so long.

De Niro was last seen in this year’s big screen thriller Limitless, which also starred Bradley Cooper. He is currently serving as the president of this year’s Cannes Film Festival jury.
