MAKE IT OR BREAK IT “Dog Eat Dog” Review

Make It or Break It (ABC Family) - Dog Eat Dog

MAKE IT OR BREAK IT “Dog Eat Dog” Season 2 Episode 18 – Secrets, strategies and surprises. Dialogue with double meaning. Emily who? Oh and there was gymnastics, too, on tonight’s MAKE IT OR BREAK IT. “Dog Eat Dog” is a great set up for the season finale. It is one of the few episodes this season that is focused and has a purpose. It also seems to be returning the teen drama to its original soapy goodness. We finally get a view of the characters as individuals within a community, not just in their own separate worlds. Through their interactions tonight, relationships take a major step forward, which will finally (cross your fingers!) allow for the story line to develop and for an advance in plot.

Kaylie feels stressed about competing for the last spot on Worlds Team. Austin comes to the rescue, devising a plan that has Kaylie focusing on just the vault and going behind Sasha’s back again. It pays off, and Kaylie is on the team! Ambiguity 1: “Something about you makes me pay attention to every single thing you do. I just want you to be happy.” Is Austin smitten with Kaylie, or is she just a reminder of his sister, or what else?

The Keelers deal with Mark’s job loss and money troubles. His return was sudden and completely random. Ambiguity 2: Kim talking about not being controlled by fear, despite their problems, could have been a pep talk about confidence for the girls and their lives and gymnastics. This part also felt random and slightly out of place to me.

Payson and Max bond over a stray dog, frustrating Lauren to no end. Payson is going to have her heart broken if she doesn’t face her true feelings soon. Ambiguity 3: “Part of me secretly hopes that no one claims Phoebe.” Is Lauren transferring her feelings about Max onto Phoebe?

Lauren is anxious about Steve and Summer’s wedding plans, but not worried enough to forget to seduce Max. Both Lauren and Kelly have turned the “psych out” strategy into an art form. I want Kaylie to introduce her therapist to Lauren and Kelly, who are so unbelievably mean and devious in their actions and words.

Hilarious, cheesy photo of Kelly on the bus. Kelly’s manager and mom Sheila is a hard-core drill sergeant! Kelly passes on the verbal abuse she gets from her Mom to her competitors. Yikes, did Kelly inherit or learn those evil traits? I find it odd to see Kathy Najimy in the role of somebody so terrible. I think of her as a comedic actress. She does a great job with all that malice!

I almost started feeling sorry for Kelly after she breaks down in front of Kaylie; but then she steals Kaylie’s diary. Why? I don’t think she was faking her feelings or outburst. Even for Kelly, it would have required computer-speed thinking to have devised a plan so quickly. Is it her need for her mother’s approval, or the fact that she really wants to win and beat Kaylie? Or it could be just for the money/endorsements.

Chloe settles Emily’s accounts at The Rock. Ambiguity 4: “I’m going to miss this place, too.” Will she and Emily be back? Or does this refer to Steve?
