TREME “Santa Clause Do You Ever Get the Blues” Advance Review

TREME Santa Claus, Do You Ever Get the B

After last week’s intense, and somewhat disturbing, episode of TREME, I wondered how the writers would tackle the aftermath. I again had the opportunity to watch Sunday’s episode, “Santa Clause Do You Ever Get the Blues” in advance. True to Treme, and New Orleans, things just carry on. Of course, part of this is due to the fact that Ladonna is downplaying exactly what happened to her. More importantly, the residents of New Orleans have learned that they have no choice but to move on as aid is a long way coming.

It is Christmas time in the Big Easy. What stood out to me in this episode is how very alone the characters all are, even when they are together. No one seems to be on the same page, everyone wants to pursue their own thing, not really considering how they may be affecting others. Some characters are making progress, like Nelson, whose campaign to get in with the big players of New Orleans seems to be working. But, then again, Nelson is not an original. He is someone that has come in to take advantage of the weak and those in need. The there is Antoine who almost has a complete band. DJ Davis is moving closer to his dream of a production company.

Behind all of that though, is still Toni’s search for the truth about the looter murder, Ladonna’s struggle to achieve “normal” just like Albert whom son thinks he is simply depressed and needs a pill. If only there were a pill to help out the characters on Treme.

This episode was slow and easy, a welcome change from the heaviness of last week. Despite no major events occurring, the story progresses. Look for some changes from Janette and Antoine, and perhaps a connection between Toni and Sophia.

Tune in tonight HBO at 10 pm ET for the latest episode of Treme and then come back here and tell me what you thought. Was tonight’s epsiode too light and easy or just the right tempo after last week? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
