THE VAMPIRE DIARIES “As I Lay Dying” Season 2 Episode 22 – And here we end season 2 with an episode that doesn’t quite match last week’s awesomeness – but sets up a delicious premise for season 3.

Elijah is dead! (I really liked the guy, so I’m sad he’s gone.) Damon’s going to live! (Although I still prefer Lauren’s idea of human!Damon from last week’s comments.) Stefanus rises! (And that is an unfortunate moniker but let’s stick with the theme we know.) Jeremy sees dead!vampire!ex-girlfriends! (He could see Jesus in a biscuit for all I care, I’m just glad he’s alive.)

The episode was pretty self-explanatory, so let’s look at season two as a whole and where we think season 3 may go.

The Vampire Diaries isn’t a perfect show. I could probably pick a dozen things from this season that I didn’t like or that I feel didn’t work well, but the secret to TVD is that it moves fast. The bad stuff is in the past by the very next episode, while the good stuff socks you in the gut and leaves you reeling. The audience has to be on the ball, remembering things that came weeks before or that were mentioned in passing so that they can tie the story together just like the characters do. It’s an interesting approach and one that makes TVD feel like it’s been on the air for more than just two seasons.

And I freakin’ love it.

Season two’s Klaus storyline got a bit tedious at points and, I have to admit, I’m still not sure about this whole vampire-werewolf hybrid thing. It seems pretty lame after all of the buildup, but I’m willing to wait and see how it pans out in season three. If nothing else, it’ll be interesting to see how the Scrappy Gang kill the unkillable – if they ever do. With all the twists and turns this show throws at us maybe Klaus will be a good guy by the end of next season!

The best part of season two for me was probably the relationships and not just in the romantic sense. While I loved Damon’s (badly) hidden feelings for Elena, and Witchy B and Jeremy getting together, I also liked when we saw Kickass Caroline and Stefan or Tywolf and Matt interacting with each other. This entire cast has great chemistry and it’s so enjoyable to watch.

So. Season three, people – what do we think will happen?

Now that Stefan’s gone darkside, will Damon and Elena approach a relationship? I make no secret of how much I would love to see some Damon/Elena stuff in the show, but wouldn’t it also be great on a storytelling level too? If nothing else, it would be interesting to contrast and compare Elena’s relationship with each brother.

(Sidenote: I’m not sure why I want to see Damon/Elena so much since I don’t actually like Elena. I absolutely adore Katherine, so I know it’s not a general dislike of Nina Dobrev, but I find Elena utterly boring as a leading lady. Thankfully, an appreciation of her character isn’t actually necessary to enjoy the rest of the show.)

Will Stefan leave town with Klaus? It would be disappointing if he went back to team good after a few episodes, but it would also be disappointing if he left Mystic Falls. Damon and Elena dealing with Stefanus would be angsty goodness and I’m kind of hoping Caroline gets to mentor him and help get him on the road to recovery.

And last but not least, Jeremy. Is he seeing ghosts or are Vicky and Anna back? Jeremy becoming some sort of medium is a really appealing idea, I think. Being the youngest human, he’s often pushed to the sidelines (as he complains about for the upteenth time in the finale). He can’t become a supernatural though. There are already way, way – are you listening, TVD? – WAY too many of those on this show. But if he can see dead people, well, then he gets to be both human and badass and I’m all for that. (Hey, I’ve spent two seasons perving over Jeremy, why break the habit now?) If Vicky and Anna are actually physically back, well, then I’m not sure how I feel about their return.

So now it’s over to you, dear reader. What did you think of season 2? Are you looking forward to season 3? Do you have any speculation or theories about what we’ve seen or what is to come? Let us know in the comments! And let’s toss out a couple questions too:

* Who is your favourite dearly departed character from season two?
(Me: Oh, Jenna the Liability, we knew thee so little.)
* Which character do you think had the best story arc this season?
(Me: Tywolf.)
* Stefan or Damon? Stefanus or Damonus?
(Me: Damon. Stefanus – I think he has potential as a badass and his nickname makes me giggle.)
* If you had a pick one character to return in season 3, who would it be?
(Me: Slater. Remember him? The vamp in the coffee shop in ‘Katerina’? Looked like Misha Collins and staked himself? He was geeky and adorable and I am clearly very shallow.)
