MAKE IT OR BREAK IT “To Thine Own Self Be True” Review

Make It or Break It (ABC Family) - To Thine Own Self Be True

MAKE IT OR BREAK IT “To Thine Own Self Be True” Season 2 Episode 17 – Last week on MAKE IT OR BREAK IT, Emily was in a full blown panic over her pregnancy, which led her to act like a six year old in the middle of a temper tantrum, complete with the annoying whine. This week I was expecting someone (anyone) to sit down to talk to her about ALL her options, not just abortion. But this week Emily is nowhere to be seen. At least Damon has decided to support Emily in her choice. In tonight’s episode “To Thine Own Self Be True,” Lauren is the one on the edge of a breakdown, pushing for the marriage between Summer and Steve and wanting to make it official as soon as possible. I’m still not quite sure what to make of Lauren’s desperate attempts to create a family, in order to be adopted and have a mother. Where is this story going, and how will the show deal with it?

The other big news is that Kaylie returns to The Rock. It is immediately apparent that both Sasha and Kaylie are suffering from a major loss in confidence, partially due to Emily’s sudden predicament and absence. But never fear, Payson, Lauren, Austin and Max help Kaylie practice, defying Sasha’s instructions. Kaylie finds inspiration from her pact with Damon to fight and trust herself. Sasha has a therapy session with Kaylie’s therapist, which influences him to put Kaylie back on the World Team. Yeah!

I appreciate that Make It or Break It is still making references to Kaylie’s anorexia and not just dropping the topic now that she is back in the gym. Like the therapist tells Sasha, Kaylie is still recovering and will be in therapy for the rest of her life; but she has to take chances though it may mean falling down again.

Of course, Kelly Parker is not so happy about Kaylie’s reinstatement on the team. Isn’t it enough that Kelly is taking Emily’s place on the National Team? She rubs her new position on the team in everyone’s face, even dealing a low blow to Sasha about feeling responsible about Emily. When I look at Kelly’s (and her Denver Gym buddy’s) hair, I think of little devil’s horns beginning to grow. Nicole Gale Anderson portrays a completely believable witch. She is also a snitch, squealing in the guise of concern! It was a great moment when Sasha takes Kelly down a notch by saying, “I have no intention of playing favorites…even with you.”

I loved seeing Payson, Lauren and Kaylie back together as a team. Their camaraderie is what keeps the story going. Payson is very much the heart of the group. Her need for her teammates’ support shows how important the team is to her and the others as well. Just think how strong they could be with Emily! Lauren and Payson going through the motions with Kaylie on the uneven bars was a perfect team moment. Another thing I enjoy about Payson is her relationship and interactions with her Mom. I think she is most natural in those scenes. It was also fun to watch Max chasing after Payson, and Payson turning him down – right into Lauren’s arms and lips. What a chump!

Issues that are up in the air: Is Emily giving up on her dream? That would be a sad message. She has to return, doesn’t she; but when? Did the kiss between Kaylie and Damon mean anything? It seems like it did to me. When talking to Sasha, did Summer’s slip of the tongue (“I’m ready for you”) mean anything? I say who is she kidding; she still wants him!

What do you think? I know many viewers weren’t happy with the last episode. Did you like episode 17 “To Thine Own Self Be True” of Make It or Break It? Comment below.
