Aaron Sorkin and Scott Rudin’s HBO pilot, tentatively titled More as This Story Develops, is a step closer to naming its female lead and two big supporting roles. According to Deadline.com, Marisa Tomei, Olivia Munn, and Alison Pill are currently in talks to join the cast.

The project gives a behind-the-scenes look at a fictional nightly cable news show, and follows cable news anchor Will McCallister (Jeff Daniels) and his production team as they deliver the news. As the front-runner for the lead role, Marisa Tomei would play Mackenzie, the executive producer, “for whom producing the news is what she does best and everything else is tied for last place.” Pill is slated to play Maggie, a young associate producer on the news assignment desk; while Munn would be a sexy financial analyst with her own show on the same cable network as McCallister.

Tomei is currently in the off-Broadway play Marie and Bruce, and can be seen in the movie The Lincoln Lawyer. Pill’s latest TV roles were on HBO’s In Treatment and Starz’ The Pillars of the Earth. She also has been in such movies as Milk and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Munn most recently had recurring roles on ABC Family’s Greek and NBC’s Perfect Couples. She also continues to act as correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show.

Off the record: This trio fascinates me for their obvious differences and range of experience. They’re not people you would instinctively think to put together in a TV show. It makes me more excited for this pilot. What do you think of Sorkin/Rudin choosing these three actresses?
