THE CRIMSON PETAL AND THE WHITE (UK) Series 1 Episode 3 Review

The Crimson Petal and the White

THE CRIMSON PETAL AND THE WHITE Series 1 Episode 3 – We’re taken right into the heart of the Rackham family, this week, when Sugar is installed as little Sophie’s governess. Here she learns just how neglected Sophie is and tries to rectify the problem, while also continuing to play angel to the disturbed Agnes.

Maid Letty seems suspicious, but if she knows the true nature of Sugar and William’s relationship, she stays quiet. It seems like Sugar might have a larger problem on her hands though, with recurrent nausea that looks a lot like morning sickness.

Episode three shifted The Crimson Petal and the White into new territory. Sugar is no longer in the seedy underworld where she feels at home. Now she’s in a respectable household which, it turns out, wasn’t much better before her arrival. Is anyone else starting to think that Sugar really is a strange sort of angel? She seems to piece together these fragmented lives almost effortlessly.

The only person Sugar couldn’t fix was Agnes. The reasons for Agnes’ ill health aren’t explored deeply in episode three but they really don’t need to be. We can gather that sex was part of the issue, that she didn’t understand being pregnant, and that she may not even feel like Sophie is her own. William comes to agree with Dr Curlew that Agnes needs to be committed, but Sugar is convinced that isn’t the best course of action. Will sending her away to a convent have a better outcome?

There were little things that jolted me out of the story for a moment, such as the passage of time (it felt like only a matter of days between Sugar joining the Rackham household and the end of the episode) and the reappearance of Mrs Fox (who seems to be alive, though her scene was followed immediately by a dream sequence, so I’m not 100% sure).

That said, I found episode three incredibly enjoyable. The Crimson Petal and the White really is a visual treat with gorgeous lighting, clothes and hair. The fourth and final episode airs next Wednesday and I’m already sad to see this series go.
